Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
As an Employment Officer at Southampton City Council, my role focuses on supporting clients to move closer to, secure, and sustain employment by providing tailored advice and practical support. On a day‑to‑day basis, this involves one‑to‑one work with jobseekers to identify barriers to employment, develop action plans, improve CVs and interview skills, and support job search activity, while also linking individuals to training, education, and other wrap‑around services such as skills, health, or housing support. I work closely with local employers, training providers, and partner organisations to create employment and work‑experience opportunities, ensuring support aligns with local labour market needs. The role also includes monitoring progress, recording outcomes, and contributing to employability programmes that support wider council priorities around economic inclusion and reducing unemployment.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

5/5
I enjoy my programme to a great extent, as it is both rewarding and engaging. It provides meaningful opportunities to develop my skills, build confidence, and make a real difference by supporting people toward positive employment outcomes. The structure, support, and practical experience make it a motivating and enjoyable experience overall.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
Yes, I have learnt new skills and further developed existing ones. Throughout the programme, I have strengthened my communication and interpersonal skills through regular one‑to‑one engagement with clients, while also improving my ability to assess individual needs and tailor support effectively. I have developed greater confidence in employability coaching, including CV support, interview preparation, and action planning, as well as enhanced my organisational, time‑management, and record‑keeping skills. Overall, the programme has helped me build practical, transferable skills while reinforcing my existing strengths in a professional setting.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

5/5
The Employability Practitioner Level 4 apprenticeship is well organised and clearly structured, with a strong balance between practical learning and theoretical knowledge. The programme is set out in a clear framework with well‑defined modules, learning outcomes, and milestones, making it easy to understand what is expected at each stage. Regular training sessions, assignments, and on‑the‑job application ensure learning is relevant and directly linked to day‑to‑day practice, while support from tutors, mentors, and workplace supervisors provides guidance and consistency throughout. Overall, the structure supports steady progression, reinforces learning effectively, and helps build confidence and competence in the role.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
I receive a high level of support from my employer throughout my apprenticeship. This includes regular supervision and catch‑ups to review progress, dedicated study time to complete apprenticeship learning and assignments, and ongoing encouragement to apply new knowledge directly to my role. My manager and colleagues are approachable and supportive, providing guidance, feedback, and opportunities to develop skills through practical experience. Overall, the employer support helps me balance work and learning effectively and makes the apprenticeship a positive and well‑supported experience.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

5/5
I receive a strong level of support from my training provider while working towards my qualification. This includes regular check‑ins and reviews with a dedicated tutor, clear guidance on coursework and assessments, and access to learning resources that support my development. The training sessions are well structured and relevant to my role, and support is readily available whenever I need clarification or additional help. Overall, the training provider is approachable, responsive, and invested in helping me succeed throughout the apprenticeship.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

5/5
I feel that my qualification through the training provider supports me very well in performing my role more effectively. The learning is closely aligned to my day‑to‑day responsibilities, helping me apply theory directly to practice, particularly around employability support, client engagement, and action planning. It has increased my confidence, strengthened my professional knowledge, and improved the quality of support I provide to customers. Overall, the qualification has had a positive impact on my performance, enabling me to work more confidently, consistently, and effectively in my role.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

5/5
Yes, there are opportunities to get involved in social activities at work, which helps build strong relationships with colleagues and creates a positive team culture. These include informal social events such as team dinners out, which provide a relaxed setting to connect outside of work, as well as organised away days that combine training with enjoyable activities like team quizzes and group challenges. These events encourage collaboration, boost morale, and give valuable time to spend with colleagues in a more informal and engaging environment.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Southampton City Council?

I would advise anyone applying to Southampton City Council to start by thoroughly researching the job role and the council itself, so you clearly understand the responsibilities, values, and how the role contributes to the local community. When completing the application and preparing for interviews, use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answers clearly and demonstrate your skills with real examples.
