Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
As a Debt Officer Apprentice at Southampton City Council, my role involves supporting the recovery and management of outstanding debts while developing a strong understanding of local government finance processes. On a day-to-day basis, I assist with reviewing accounts, contacting customers to discuss repayment options, and ensuring cases are handled fairly and in line with council policies. I also work with internal systems to update records, monitor payment arrangements, and escalate cases when necessary. The role provides a good balance between administrative tasks and customer interaction, helping me build both technical knowledge and communication skills. The team is supportive, and I am given guidance and training to steadily increase my responsibilities and confidence.

The training and mentorship provided have been excellent, allowing me to build confidence and gain a clear understanding of the role. Overall, it has been a very positive and rewarding experience, and I would highly recommend the programme to others looking to start a career in this field.

5/5
I have improved my communication skills, particularly when speaking with customers about sensitive financial situations, ensuring I remain professional, empathetic, and clear. I have also developed strong organisational and time management skills by handling multiple cases and prioritising workloads effectively.
In addition, I have gained valuable experience using internal systems and understanding debt recovery processes within a local authority setting. My problem-solving skills have improved as I assess individual cases and help find suitable repayment solutions. Overall, the apprenticeship has significantly increased my confidence and ability to work independently while still being part of a supportive team.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

5/5
The programme is very well organised and structured, with a clear balance between workplace responsibilities and learning. There is a defined pathway for development, and expectations are communicated clearly from the start. The combination of practical experience and structured training ensures steady progress, and regular reviews help keep everything on track. This structure has made it easy to understand what is required at each stage of the apprenticeship.

The support from my training provider has been excellent. Tutors are knowledgeable and responsive, providing clear guidance on assignments and coursework. They are always available to offer help and ensure I fully understand the material. The resources provided are useful and well-structured, making it easier to stay organised and keep up with the qualification requirements.
