Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
On a day-to-day basis, this includes coordinating subcontractors, monitoring site progress, managing logistics and deliveries, and raising requisitions for plant, materials, and equipment. I ensure compliance with RAMS and site rules, carry out site inspections, and support health and safety initiatives such as SPAs and toolbox talks. I also maintain accurate records, including site diaries and documentation.
In addition, I chair monthly workers’ engagement meetings, encouraging open communication and addressing workforce concerns. I act as a peer-to-peer supporter on site, promoting wellbeing and providing a point of contact for operatives. I liaise with suppliers and internal teams, resolve on-site issues, and contribute to continuous improvement by identifying risks and improving processes. My role requires strong communication, organisation, and problem-solving skills to ensure the site operates efficiently and safely.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
In addition, I have developed my organisational and problem-solving skills through managing logistics, raising requisitions, and resolving day-to-day site issues, which has increased my confidence in decision-making and site management.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?
However, the overall apprenticeship journey, particularly around timelines for completion, gateway requirements, and responsibilities between the employer and university, has been less clearly defined. Greater clarity around these processes would have supported better planning and understanding of progression through to end-point assessment.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
However, in terms of the wider apprenticeship process and progression to higher-level qualifications (such as NVQ Level 6/7), there have been some challenges and delays which have made it more difficult to move forward as quickly as I would have liked. Greater clarity and alignment in this area would further support my development.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
However, there has been less clarity around the overall apprenticeship process, particularly in relation to timelines, gateway requirements, and progression through to end-point assessment. Greater guidance in this area would have helped with planning and understanding the next steps.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
While much of my practical learning comes from on-site experience, the qualification has provided a strong theoretical foundation that complements this and has improved my confidence when communicating with stakeholders and managing site activities.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
These activities provide a good opportunity to build relationships, support team morale, and engage with colleagues outside of day-to-day site operations.

Why?
There is also a positive team culture, with a strong focus on health and safety, wellbeing, and collaboration, which makes it a good place to work and progress within the construction industry.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to John Sisk and Son Ltd?
In addition, I would recommend gaining clear understanding early on of the apprenticeship progression and promotion structure, including how performance is assessed and what is required to move forward. Having this clarity will help you set expectations, plan your development, and take ownership of your career progression within the company.
