Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As an Apprentice Site Manager, my role involves supporting the planning, coordination, and safe delivery of construction activities on site. I work closely with the site management team, subcontractors, and stakeholders to ensure works are carried out in line with programme, quality standards, and health and safety requirements.
On a day-to-day basis, this includes coordinating subcontractors, monitoring site progress, managing logistics and deliveries, and raising requisitions for plant, materials, and equipment. I ensure compliance with RAMS and site rules, carry out site inspections, and support health and safety initiatives such as SPAs and toolbox talks. I also maintain accurate records, including site diaries and documentation.
In addition, I chair monthly workers’ engagement meetings, encouraging open communication and addressing workforce concerns. I act as a peer-to-peer supporter on site, promoting wellbeing and providing a point of contact for operatives. I liaise with suppliers and internal teams, resolve on-site issues, and contribute to continuous improvement by identifying risks and improving processes. My role requires strong communication, organisation, and problem-solving skills to ensure the site operates efficiently and safely.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Yes, I have developed both new and existing skills through my role. I have strengthened my communication and coordination skills by working closely with subcontractors and leading workers’ engagement sessions. I have also improved my understanding of health and safety management, including the use of RAMS, SPAs, and site inspections.
In addition, I have developed my organisational and problem-solving skills through managing logistics, raising requisitions, and resolving day-to-day site issues, which has increased my confidence in decision-making and site management.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme has been well structured in terms of academic delivery, with clear modules, resources, and support provided throughout the learning process. This has enabled me to develop my knowledge in a logical and progressive way.
However, the overall apprenticeship journey, particularly around timelines for completion, gateway requirements, and responsibilities between the employer and university, has been less clearly defined. Greater clarity around these processes would have supported better planning and understanding of progression through to end-point assessment.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
I receive a high level of support from my site team, who are very proactive in supporting my learning and development. They actively encourage me to expand my knowledge, take on additional responsibilities, and pursue further qualifications, which has significantly contributed to my confidence and progression on site.
However, in terms of the wider apprenticeship process and progression to higher-level qualifications (such as NVQ Level 6/7), there have been some challenges and delays which have made it more difficult to move forward as quickly as I would have liked. Greater clarity and alignment in this area would further support my development.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I have received good support from UBE throughout my studies, with clear learning materials, structured modules, and access to tutors when required. The academic content has been well delivered and has supported my understanding and progression through the qualification.
However, there has been less clarity around the overall apprenticeship process, particularly in relation to timelines, gateway requirements, and progression through to end-point assessment. Greater guidance in this area would have helped with planning and understanding the next steps.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The qualification has supported me in performing better in my role by strengthening my understanding of key construction principles, including health and safety, sustainability, and project planning. It has helped me to better understand the reasoning behind site processes and make more informed decisions day to day.
While much of my practical learning comes from on-site experience, the qualification has provided a strong theoretical foundation that complements this and has improved my confidence when communicating with stakeholders and managing site activities.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are a range of extra-curricular activities available at work. These include monthly social events organised by team members, such as walks, bowling, darts, and table tennis. In addition, there is an active site-based WhatsApp group, where colleagues regularly arrange informal lunches and after-work drinks.
These activities provide a good opportunity to build relationships, support team morale, and engage with colleagues outside of day-to-day site operations.

Yes

Yes, I would recommend John Sisk & Son Ltd to a friend. The company provides a strong and supportive working environment, with good opportunities for learning and development. I have been given the chance to take on responsibility, expand my knowledge, and gain valuable on-site experience.
There is also a positive team culture, with a strong focus on health and safety, wellbeing, and collaboration, which makes it a good place to work and progress within the construction industry.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to John Sisk and Son Ltd?
I would advise anyone applying to John Sisk & Son Ltd to take full advantage of the learning opportunities available and be proactive in gaining site experience, as this will significantly support your development. It is also important to build strong relationships with your team and ask questions to maximise what you learn on site.
In addition, I would recommend gaining clear understanding early on of the apprenticeship progression and promotion structure, including how performance is assessed and what is required to move forward.
