Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As an apprentice I would rotate around various departments. In my first year I with engine and shop floor appreciation shadowing an engine start to finish. I then moved into office based roles working alongside different Engineering teams and Quality teams. In my final placement in my 4th year I chose to work in Manufacturing Engineering and on a day to day, support line side build issues, design new hand tools, review and update process documents etc. This was whilst going to College and University on Day release once per week.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I very much enjoyed my time throughout my apprenticeship. I have been able to work with range of people with different skill sets and have been able to apply these different skills and lessons across various day to day activities.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
The two different skill types gained from my apprenticeship are University based and In work. I learnt academic skills at College and University, this helped me understand the fundamentals of Engineering skills and why they were important. At work I was able to apply these skills and use them to design new tools and make more informed decisions out Engineering changes.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The apprenticeship program has changed structure since I started and is much more structured now. I initially started on a Level 4 then was able to progress to a level 5 and then Degree at level 6. The company was very supportive and accommodating but the college and universities lacked as much support.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
The company has your best interests at heart and will provide any sort of support if issue arise. The apprenticeship program is mostly run by previous apprentices so there is a mutual understanding general agreement on how things are ran. Any issues raised at a college were dealt quickly by the Apprentice lead and HR.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
The College and University was a similar experience to people who were not in an apprenticeship. You are not able to join as many classes however and it is a more condensed course because you only attend 1 day per week. We had regular meetings with college reps for reviews and Off the Job hours but these reps would often change due to people leaving which made it difficult to follow a consistent plan.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I think there is definitely value in the academic side of the apprenticeship, learning Mathematical skills, Excel skills are the most handy on a day to basis. However, I have learnt more practical skills in work applying my skills and shadowing Engineers and Other Technicians.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There is a Football team that meets up weekly.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Cummins to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Overall the apprenticeship is very good and educational. It has good opportunities to progress internally after the apprenticeship. The support is good and consistent and provides training internally as well.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Cummins?
I would recommend doing some research on the company and what it actually builds on site locally too. I would also suggest showing why or how you can apply your skills you have learnt not only at school but outside of school to the job role you are applying for.
