Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

When I was a degree apprentice I got lots of opportunities to work with more experienced developers to help improve my knowledge and skills. This helped me improve my confidence and I was able to pick up pieces of work independently, but equally I felt comfortable to ask for help when I was stuck - which also helped me improve my teamwork skills. I took one study day a week for the university side of things, but if I needed additional time due to several deadlines happening in a short space of time, RDT was willing to give me more study days so I was able to manage both work and study.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoyed the programme as it allowed me to progress within the company and improve my developer knowledge and skills so I was able to tackle more challenging pieces of work independently. The environment and people are great, I felt comfortable asking for help as well as contributing to team meetings and having my ideas heard.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have improved my skills a lot since being at RDT due to the experienced developers I have had the opportunity to work with. My confidence improved in terms of coding capabilities as when I started I only knew a few coding basics, but I quickly became a subject matter expert in an area and people often came to me for help with any issues. My communication skills also improved as I now feel more confident contributing in team meetings and sharing my ideas.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme is well structured as the university content is all online so I was able to take study days when it was convenient for me and RDT - based on work or university deadlines coming up. As time went on, and my knowledge and skills increased, the support I needed decreased and I became more independent picking up work and the team felt confident in my code changes.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I received a lot of support from RDT during my apprenticeship - there are so many people to ask for help, as well as giving me extra study days when I needed them.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I had a coach who I had quarterly meetings with to check on both my university work and RDT work and that I was hitting my goals and getting the support I needed. I also had module tutors where I was able to join their tutorials or email them whenever I had any module-specific queries to help with the content and assignments.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The qualification worked well alongside my role, as it helped solidify my software engineering skills, including helping me understand all aspects of the software development lifecycle and how this works at RDT.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are several social events such as Christmas parties, bowling, karting, team lunches, and each team often sets up their own social activities too.

It's a good place to start your career - especially on the degree apprenticeship route as it allows you to learn whilst working and apply what you have learnt on a daily basis to help solidify your understanding.

Learn coding basics, do some coding projects, keep up to date on news going on in the technology space - including AI news.
