Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I am a Business Administration Apprentice with my placement in the Benefits department. My role involves the usual clerical jobs; printing documents, sending letters, completing spreadsheets. But I have taken on jobs to support other departments as well as my own. Logging applications, investigating our systems to find important information for the safeguarding team and updating the system with new information received from our customers regarding their claims.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy my job, and I love the team I am apart of. My job fluctuates in terms of how busy I am, but I don't mind that, I've got a range of roles that I have taken on that differ in area. I feel I have developed whilst being here in confidence and skills.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I've developed my ability to use the Microsoft Office applications. My confidence has grown, with colleagues making me feel capable in what I do and trusted. Communication is something I have built on, having previously not used emails as frequently as I do now, as well as phone calls and teams chats. I have learnt to navigate and utilise the systems used in the Benefits department, inputting data as well as extracting.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

We have clear 'Units' that our learning programme follows. Each unit is paired with a session that involves a powerpoint that we are talked through followed by an assignment to complete. From the start it is outlined how the learning will progress and what steps are taken. However, following each assignment we have progress bars, and for some of the units these aren't 100%. It's a little confusing as to why, but it seems as though for each evidence submitted a kind of criteria gets ticked off.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I feel very supported in my role. I am confident that any problem I have will be handled appropriately and with my best interest in mind. There isn't anything I think has been dealt with poorly.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

City of Lincoln Council - we receive lots of support regarding our qualification, constantly in contact and are made to feel like we can ask questions whenever we need answers. I don't ever feel like we only receive support during training sessions, we know we can contact them any time.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I think our qualification allows us to acknowledge the different skills we use in our roles. Highlighting how the way we work links to what we are taught within the qualification. It can also help to identify what there is to improve on withing our roles.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

We have trade unions. But nothing directly, or at least there doesn't appear to be, I haven't come across anything. Although they do advertise for external activities e.g. the Lincoln 10k and The Lincolnshire Public Sector Challenge, offering free registration.

Would you recommend City of Lincoln Council to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I think the way the Apprenticeship works is really beneficial. You get the qualification but also develop an immense level of experience through the department you have your 'placement' in.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to City of Lincoln Council?
Due to each of the apprentices being placed in different, if able to, look out for a specific department. We each have a different experience due to working in different departments. But that isn't to say any are not worth applying for, just that people may be better suited to one department rather than another or would get more out of a specific department as it could lead them to a specific role they want.
