Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

4/5
Four days per week are spent on placement around the company. For me so far, these have included exterior/ interior quality, digitalisation, electronics validation, supplier management and parts quality, change coordination, assembly quality, and chassis/ powertrain validation (all apply to my job role). One day a week is spent attending university classes as part of the degree, where all modules are studied throughout the day. The university classes require a weekly day trip up to Birmingham from Oxford, where all lectures and on-site practical elements are completed.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

4/5
I have enjoyed the placements quite a bit so far. The range in projects and the ability to get familiar with colleagues around the business has kept them very interesting and I feel that I have the opportunity to contribute to each department I have been in. I have also been given the leads on a few projects and I have enjoyed the responsibility that accompanies them. Balancing university work has been more challenging this year, with the travel requirement and the reduction of in-class time to work on projects and assignments; this differs from previous years where teaching was done on-site at Plant Oxford and there was time allocated in each module for assignment progression. The work/university balance has been more difficult, however not impossible as it is common for placement areas to allow you some time to work on assignments depending on the departmental workload.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
I have learned many new skills relating to my job role during placements due to the experience gained in different departments. I have been given a fair amount of responsibility in each department which has allowed me develop my work ethic and confidence, but also specific more job-related skills including design, root cause investigations and collaboration with multiple process partners and suppliers.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

4/5
The BMW provided part of the programme is reasonably well structured as most of the day-to-day is organised by the placement managers and placement mentors, who are experienced in managing apprentices and have plans in place to ensure that the apprentices gain the necessary skills and experience that the placement offers. Meetings with training advisors are conducted monthly and are run by the apprentices, ensuring that all relevant questions, experiences and concerns are discussed in an open environment. The university part of the programme is also not too bad on structure, with most information and lessons being readily available through the university systems; for the most part (depending on lecturer) the course is also planned appropriately so that completion of tasks and assignments is attainable.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
Placement managers and assigned mentors are consistently approachable and make a clear effort to engage with apprentices on a regular basis. This creates an environment in which support is readily accessible, and any required guidance can be discussed openly and addressed effectively.
Training managers have also provided strong support throughout the apprenticeship, particularly when additional assistance has been required. They have a willingness to engage with feedback and suggestions, and have remained open to discussion regarding both the structure and ongoing development of the apprenticeship programme.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

4/5
The level of academic support is largely dependent on the tutor for each individual subject. Many tutors are willing to provide one‑to‑one support when complex topics arise and are proactive in offering constructive feedback to support ongoing improvement. This has been particularly beneficial when developing understanding in more challenging areas of the curriculum. However, the level of individual support is not consistent across all modules, and in some cases limited engagement at an individual level has made independent study more demanding.
Since the introduction of in‑person attendance at the university, which was not available during the first two years of the apprenticeship, each apprentice has been assigned a personal tutor. The purpose of this role is to ensure a positive academic experience by providing additional support where required and actively identifying opportunities to improve the overall quality of the learning experience.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

3/5
Several modules have been particularly relevant and beneficial to my development. Quality and design focused modules have been the most applicable across my various placements, as the majority of my role is quality‑based and frequently involves elements of design and root cause analysis. The theoretical grounding provided by these modules has supported my understanding of the work carried out during placements. However, in most cases, the specific knowledge and practical skills required for my job role are primarily developed during the placements themselves, with limited additional contribution from university‑based study. As a result, the placements have remained the most significant source of role‑specific learning, while the academic modules have played a more supporting and contextual role.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

4/5
There are a couple apprentice-led teams that allow for extra-curricular tasks, for example a charity team who organise site-wide vents to help raise money for our chosen charity. There is also an on-site gym and football team for those who prefer to get involved in more active activities; all of which are open to apprentices.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BMW Group UK to a friend?

Yes

Why?

The apprenticeship programme as a whole is enjoyable, interesting and beneficial to a person's career growth. I have learnt a lot while being on placement and have definitely been able to determine that it is a career that I enjoy. The added bonus is the degree part which grants a higher qualification alongside the job itself. It is definitely the perfect option for someone who learns more form actively doing and immersing themselves in a job, rather than spending their time sitting in lectures.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group UK?

The best advice I could give for applying to BMW is to really think about why you would personally like to join the company, and why you think that the company might benefit from you joining the apprenticeship. Showing your passion for the sector, but mainly the company itself will really help with your application. Showing passion for working for the company in general will prove that you are more likely to be committed to working hard for the job and the degree too; both are major points to prove during your application and subsequent interviews if your application is successful.
