I was an investment banking summer analyst. My role consisted of assisting my team (analyst, associate, VP, MD) with various tasks which could be helping with modelling cash flows of a company, formatting and creating slide content for investors, researching companies, etc
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, you were expected to take ownership of your tasks and when you did you would be given more responsiblity by default. You could take on as much as you could

I received quite a lot of support from the staffer and other people on the team. They organised trainings in the beggining weeks of the internship and organised feedback sessions throughout
