Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

We created an application which involved developing and testing code according to project specification, working with databases and creating presentations/demos for clients/shareholders. Paired-programming was common at the start but became more individual as the project progressed. Common routines included weekly retros and daily stand-ups to update the team on what everyone is doing. The internship aimed to be as close as possible to what a Softwire software dev day-to-day role would look like.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

During the project, we would be given tasks to create features for the app based on project requirements. This was initially done in pairs but quickly became tasks that you would handle yourself (with guidance from the trainer of course) as the project progressed. Most of these tasks were building blocks for future features and everyone in the team were given varied responsibilities. Code reviews also made sure that code was up to standard.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have learned to employ both front-end and back-end tools and languages such as React Native, Express, MySQL, Typescript – all of which were new to me. In terms of soft skills, I've also learned what it takes to work as a team in a software dev environment and the roles involved, as well as developing my problem solving skills especially in the context of software programming.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

The trainer (and basically everyone in the company) are willing to answer any questions we had, whether it be about Softwire, the project or not and received plenty of guidance on the project whenever we needed it. Weekly catch-ups with the trainer were also very helpful in giving advice and getting feedback on our work. We are also assigned mentors who we could talk to about anything that came up/get advice and met them weekly.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The company culture at Softwire is great! It's a very positive atmosphere in the office and outside whenever there is a morale event/social happening. Everyone is super friendly and the culture that is promoted at Softwire shows that the company values and therefore takes care of its employees.
