Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

Most days began with a stand-up, followed by working on development tickets for the rest of the day. Some days we would have meetings and presentations to the client. We would also have meetings and chats with members of the company, including our trainer and mentor, which were a great opportunity to reflect and improve. There were often social events to get involved with at lunchtimes / during the evenings, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes - there was initially a 2-week bootcamp focused on getting us all up to speed on the tools and technologies we would need to know for the project, but after this we were all encouraged to take more responsibility for making decisions and reviewing other peoples PRs.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Absolutely, I have learned a new programming language (Go), developed my understanding of technologies such as React and Bootstrap further, learned more about dockerisation and automated pipelines, and improved my knowledge of best practices in software development.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

Softwire provides a great support structure for this, with both a trainer and a mentor. One-to-one chats with my trainer were a great opportunity to reflect on how things were going and take on board feedback for how to improve going forward. One-to-one chats with my mentor were great for asking questions and getting a better understanding of what it is like to work at Softwire full-time.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

I love the culture at Softwire. Everyone is super friendly and welcoming, and there is an array of social events each week which I thoroughly enjoyed taking part in.
