Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
Alongside teaching, I engage in regular professional learning as part of the Level 6 Teacher Apprenticeship, including university-led training, self-study modules, and research-informed practice. This allows me to continually link educational theory with classroom application. I work closely with an Academic Mentor and Work-Based Education Officer who support the development of my teaching skills, subject knowledge, and professional behaviours.
My role also includes effective behaviour management, differentiation of the curriculum, and the deployment of support staff and resources to enhance learning. I contribute to wider school responsibilities by working collaboratively with subject leaders, senior leaders, SEND staff, and other professionals to support pupil progress and wellbeing. Additionally, I take on responsibilities such as academic tutoring, maintaining communication with parents and carers, and ensuring a broad, balanced, and inclusive curriculum is delivered in line with academy policies.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I have also strengthened my skills in assessment, marking, and the use of data to monitor student progress, set challenging targets, and plan effective interventions. This includes tracking academic performance, supporting underperformance, and contributing to strategies designed to raise attainment and eliminate gaps between learner groups.
In addition, I have developed professional skills such as reflective practice, self‑evaluation, and the ability to apply research‑informed teaching strategies effectively in the classroom. Working closely with an Academic Mentor and Work‑Based Education Officer has enhanced my ability to translate theory into practice and continuously improve my teaching.
Beyond classroom teaching, I have gained experience in academic tutoring, pastoral support, communication with parents and external agencies, and collaborative working with senior leaders, subject leaders, SEND staff, and support teams. Overall, the programme has enabled me to grow in confidence, professionalism, and competence as a teacher while equipping me with the skills required to meet high standards of teaching, learning, and student outcomes.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?
The structure of the programme provides clear expectations and progression, supported by regular university sessions, self‑study modules, and on‑the‑job learning time each week. These elements are well sequenced to develop the required knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed to meet the apprenticeship standards and achieve Qualified Teacher Status within the planned timeframe.
The support systems within the programme further enhance its organisation. Having both an Academic Mentor and a Work‑Based Education Officer provides clear guidance, consistency, and opportunities for reflection, helping to apply new learning effectively in the classroom. Overall, the programme is well planned, supportive, and coherent, enabling steady professional growth while managing the demands of teaching responsibilities.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
My employer actively supports my professional development by facilitating engagement with the Level 6 Teacher Apprenticeship, enabling collaboration with mentors, and providing opportunities to apply new skills and strategies in the classroom. I am also supported by colleagues across the academy, including subject leaders, senior leaders, SEND staff, and support teams, which helps ensure consistency and effectiveness in meeting student needs.
Overall, the level of employer support is strong and ongoing, contributing positively to my confidence, development as a teacher, and ability to balance the demands of teaching with the requirements of the apprenticeship programme.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
I am supported on an ongoing basis by an Academic Mentor and a Work‑Based Education Officer, who provide personalised guidance, regular feedback, and opportunities for reflection on my progress. This support has been particularly valuable in helping me apply new learning, develop confidence in my teaching practice, and meet the required standards.
Overall, the training provider offers consistent, accessible, and well‑coordinated support, which plays a significant role in my professional development and progression towards achieving Qualified Teacher Status.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
The structured support from the training provider, including regular guidance from an Academic Mentor and a Work‑Based Education Officer, helps me reflect on my practice and refine my approach to teaching. This ongoing feedback and professional dialogue have improved my confidence, classroom effectiveness, and ability to adapt teaching strategies to meet the needs of different learners.
Overall, the qualification has a strong positive impact on my performance in role, as it enhances both my professional knowledge and practical skills while supporting continuous improvement and progression towards Qualified Teacher Status.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
In addition, there are opportunities to engage in professional development activities such as staff training sessions, meetings, and collaborative working with colleagues across departments. These provide valuable opportunities for professional networking, sharing best practice, and developing subject and pedagogical knowledge.
While the role is demanding, involvement in these extra‑curricular and professional activities contributes positively to both student outcomes and my own professional growth, helping me feel embedded within the wider school community.
