Project Controls Apprentice Review

I am a Project Controls Apprentice at National Gas, working within the Supply Chain and Commercial team on Major Programmes. Due to the rotational nature of my apprenticeship, I move between different placements across the business, including Planning, Estimating, Risk, Reporting, Document Control, and Safety. In each placement, I am supported by placement managers and complete tasks relevant to that area, such as assisting with cost estimating for new modular buildings or attending meetings to provide project managers with updates on project progress. My role supports project teams by providing accurate information to assist with planning, cost control, and effective decision‑making on major projects.

Overall, the apprenticeship is well organised and structured. The rotational placements are planned well in advance, which gives me sufficient time to prepare and ensure I have access to the relevant software and information needed for each placement. While some placements are more structured than others, with clearer objectives, regular support from managers and colleagues helps ensure I understand my role, responsibilities, and progression throughout the apprenticeship.

I receive a high level of support from my employer. Placement managers and colleagues are always available to provide guidance, answer questions, and support my development. I also receive regular check‑ins and feedback, which helps me build confidence, understand expectations, and progress effectively throughout my apprenticeship.

I receive a good level of support from my training provider while working towards my qualifications. They deliver regular taught sessions and provide structured assignments that help reinforce learning and support my development. Guidance is available when needed, and the assignments help me apply what I learn to my role and workplace experience.

My qualification supports me well in performing my role more effectively. The assignments encourage me to actively engage with different areas of the business, speak to colleagues, and gather real examples from my workplace. This helps me better understand how project controls functions in practice and allows me to directly apply what I am learning to my day‑to‑day work, improving my confidence and overall performance.
