Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I work on-site 4 days a week and attend college 1 day a week. On-site, you support other electricians' work in all areas, commercial and domestic. When you gain your confidence and have the correct training, you will be offered tasks on your own, supervised by another qualified electrician or supervisor. It ranges from working with large cables, running large distances of cable, metal/containment work, to 1st/2nd fixing within domestic and office settings.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The main glue to any enjoyment of a role is good working relationships. Watkins is a very welcoming, supportive and proactive company. Being the only female within the team on site, sometimes construction can be a little overwhelming, but Watkins are very dynamic team and maintains good/positive working relationships. When in training, trying to complete units and your portfolio, Watkins provides great support, drive on-site and at college.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I already had 2 years of on-site electrical experience before joining Watkins. Since joining the company 11 months ago, my confidence and knowledge have grown, especially in metal work and fault-finding comprehension. If there is anything you are interested in, want to improve on or gain experience in, you are always able to ask the appropriate staff member to assist you in this.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

You are never not busy; there is always something to do if you have completed a job. Your team will support you if you need to take any time within the working day to study for any upcoming unit exams or complete areas of your portfolio. Everything you have learnt previously or at college on paper will make sense as you work on site. It is the best way to learn, especially for me.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

Watkins is a large company, but you do not feel lost within it. There are a lot of people you can receive support from, on-site and directly via email/work contact number. You receive monthly check-ins with your apprenticeship manager, but you can also contact them any time.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

You are always supported by Watkins and my college training provider.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

You always work to a high standard, and they will always check in and increase your confidence when working and learning within the role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are things to take part in within Watkins, especially within fundraising for other services or charities, but I have not taken part in any and can not fully review them. We do have occasional in-person apprenticeship group meetings with social activities booked in after.

Why?
You are part of the team. Watkins has a very good HR department, providing support for anything not onsite related. Your apprenticeship manager will always be available for any support you may need. Being a female in a male-dominated industry, Watkins supports you in the best ways possible. Watkins also provides payment towards your travel time, which is rare within a lot of companies, a good pension scheme and private health check services.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to C Watkins Plumbing Limited?
APPLY. It is a great opportunity, but you must take it seriously. They consider you a valued member of their team, but you must offer the best professional version of yourself. Be on time, ask questions, always say yes when safe, and be organised.
