Overview of the Role
Overall, how would you describe your experience at HSBC?
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
The parts I’ve enjoyed most are building relationships with customers, solving problems in the moment, and seeing the direct impact of good service. I’ve also valued learning how a large organisation operates and how different teams work together to deliver outcomes.
Business Banking: This rotation gave me great exposure to the needs of business customers and how relationship-led banking works in practice. I developed my confidence communicating with customers, understanding their goals, and supporting solutions that meet their needs while staying within policy and risk requirements.
Insight Management: This rotation strengthened my analytical and organisational skills. I gained experience using insights to support decision-making, tracking performance, and understanding how data and reporting can drive improvements in customer outcomes and team priorities.
Branch Banking: This has been the most hands-on and customer-focused part of my apprenticeship. It’s helped me build strong core banking knowledge, improve my communication and resilience, and understand what “good” looks like in terms of service, controls, and teamwork in a fast-paced environment.

Prepare STAR examples that show communication, resilience, problem-solving, and working under pressure—these come up a lot in branch-based roles.
Be ready to talk about customer service and how you’d handle difficult conversations calmly and professionally.
Ask questions about training, support, and what success looks like in the first 3 months.
During onboarding, take notes and build a network early—introduce yourself to colleagues, ask who to go to for what, and don’t be afraid to ask “why” as well as “how”.
