Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at HSBC?
My experience at HSBC has been excellent. I’ve felt genuinely supported throughout my apprenticeship and trusted with meaningful responsibilities from early on. The culture in Branch Banking is welcoming and professional, and I’ve had strong guidance from colleagues and leaders while still being encouraged to take ownership and develop my confidence.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
In Branch Banking, my responsibilities have included supporting customers with day-to-day banking needs, contributing to branch performance and service standards, and working with colleagues to ensure processes are followed accurately and efficiently. I’ve also developed my understanding of risk, compliance, and how we deliver a consistent customer experience.
The parts I’ve enjoyed most are building relationships with customers, solving problems in the moment, and seeing the direct impact of good service. I’ve also valued learning how a large organisation operates and how different teams work together to deliver outcomes.
Business Banking: This rotation gave me great exposure to the needs of business customers and how relationship-led banking works in practice. I developed my confidence communicating with customers, understanding their goals, and supporting solutions that meet their needs while staying within policy and risk requirements.
Insight Management: This rotation strengthened my analytical and organisational skills. I gained experience using insights to support decision-making, tracking performance, and understanding how data and reporting can drive improvements in customer outcomes and team priorities.
Branch Banking: This has been the most hands-on and customer-focused part of my apprenticeship. It’s helped me build strong core banking knowledge, improve my communication and resilience, and understand what “good” looks like in terms of service, controls, and teamwork in a fast-paced environment.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
5/5
I’ve consistently felt valued by my team and given opportunities to contribute in a meaningful way. I’ve been trusted with real responsibilities, included in team discussions, and supported with coaching and feedback that’s helped me improve quickly.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
5/5
I feel the compensation package is fair and the benefits add significant value. The most valuable perks/benefits for me have been:
Pension – a strong long-term benefit and a great foundation for future financial wellbeing
Sharesave – a practical way to save regularly and feel invested in the organisation
BUPA cover – reassuring to have access to healthcare support when needed
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
The role has prepared me extremely well for my future career. I’ve developed leadership capability, commercial awareness, and confidence working with customers and stakeholders. The Level 7 Senior Leader apprenticeship (with the option to top up to an MBA) has also helped me connect academic learning to real workplace challenges.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
5/5
I’ve developed a wide range of skills through both formal training and day-to-day experience. The apprenticeship has strengthened my leadership, communication, and problem-solving, while the role has built my practical banking knowledge, customer service capability, and ability to prioritise and deliver in a busy environment.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
5/5
Fantastic. I feel fully supported throughout the company
How is your work-life balance?
4/5
Very good, I take 1 study day per week and my Line Manager is fully supportive and trusts me to balance my work and study. It is of course challenging to study and be in full time work at the same time.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
5/5
The culture at HSBC is inclusive, supportive, and professional. In Branch Banking the atmosphere is welcoming and team-focused, with people willing to help and share knowledge. I’ve felt comfortable asking questions and learning on the job, and the values are visible in how colleagues treat customers and each other. Hybrid/remote working is naturally more limited in a branch-based role, but there’s still flexibility where possible and a strong focus on wellbeing and open communication.
How would you rate HSBC initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
5/5
HSBC takes equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility seriously. I’ve seen a genuine commitment to creating an environment where people can be themselves at work, and where different perspectives are welcomed. The messaging, learning resources, and internal initiatives make it clear that inclusion isn’t just a tick-box exercise—it’s part of how the organisation operates and develops its people.
How would you rate HSBC CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
5/5
HSBC’s CSR focus is strong and visible. I’ve seen real encouragement to support communities and act responsibly, including opportunities to get involved in volunteering and initiatives that consider environmental and ethical impact. It feels like the organisation is actively trying to do the right thing and make a positive difference beyond day-to-day banking.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend HSBC to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It's a great place to work with excellent core values and a company that cares about each and every employee
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
5/5
The role matched my expectations very well. The recruitment process gave a clear and realistic view of what Branch Banking involves, and once I started, the day-to-day responsibilities, pace, and customer focus aligned with what was described.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to HSBC?
Learn the HSBC values and use them in your examples (customer focus, teamwork, doing the right thing, taking ownership).
Prepare STAR examples that show communication, resilience, problem-solving, and working under pressure—these come up a lot in branch-based roles.
Be ready to talk about customer service and how you’d handle difficult conversations calmly and professionally.
Ask questions about training, support, and what success looks like in the first 3 months.
During onboarding, take notes and build a network early—introduce yourself to colleagues, ask who to go to for what, and don’t be afraid to ask “why” as well as “how”.
