Overview of the Role
Overall, how would you describe your experience at Suez Recycling and Recovery UK?
The graduate program was well designed to facilitate wider understanding of the business although sometimes on rotations there would be limited opportunity for development. However, overall the experience has been very good and I would recommend SUEZ to others.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
My second rotation was at Milton Keynes with the municipal collection and street cleansing teams.
My third rotation was more varied, understanding the support functions such as HR, Health & Safety, Environmental and Industrial Risk, Sustainability, External Affairs, and spending time at facilities not within my region such as the Anaerobic Digestor in Surrey.
My fourth rotation was with the processing team at Walsall supporting with the opening of reuse shops and new transfer station. Here I also spent time with the Luton team.
My fifth rotation was with the Industrial and Commercial collections team in Birmingham.
My final rotation was with landfill energy although this was cut short due to a secondment opportunity with the external affairs team.
My main responsibilities have been value adding project work that teams are struggling to find resource to complete. I really enjoyed my time with the business support teams hence my current secondment. I like traveling to new sites and having an overview of activities and projects and supporting where needed.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
Where I have completed project work it has had a meaningful contributes and been valued by the teams who otherwise would not have had the resource to complete the project.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
The pay is on par with other graduate programs.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
I have developed lots of transferable skills and feel prepared for the future.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
We have also had dedicated training on management skills and team working.
I have developed new skills through my data apprenticeship.
I have built confidence in identifying and communicating with stakeholders, presenting, and general knowledge of the industry. I have also developed my resilience and attitude to unexpected change.
Experience & Company Culture
How is the support you receive?
I have been provided with a mentor who was very well matched to me, we get on well and he provides excellent guidance and support. He has helped me to identify what roles I may enjoy and has encouraged me to apply for additional opportunities.
My line manager was excellent, very supportive, easy to talk to, and I knew I could contact him whenever I needed help. He encouraged me to do the data apprenticeship and ensured I had dedicated time to work on it.
How is your work-life balance?
I am allowed to manage my own workload and time which really supports my physical and mental wellbeing, this allows me to plan time with family and friends and also activities such as going to the gym or walking my dog.
I am very grateful that my manager trusts me to manage my workload and communicate my needs.
Although I do travel a lot, I like to commute as it allows me to switch on and off, visiting new sites and being in new places is also more interesting.
Unless there is an emergency I am not contacted outside of work or when on annual leave and leave my work phone at my desk (although in case of emergency key people do have my mobile number).
