Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I'm an electrical design engineer involved in a variety of tasks from creating schematic drawings using CAD software to completing risk assessments and risk reduction forms for existing installations. Hands on experience where you pick up skills very quickly.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
Busyness at work fluctuates but that is expected, University is good as well as it breaks up the week nicely so you are not in an office behind a screen all day and there is a multitude of opportunities available for your personal development and growth.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes I have learnt a lot; lots of different software's especially AutoCAD.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
Clear development path alongside expected milestones. Regular performance and universities reviews which highlight areas of weakness and targets being set in each review which pushes you to do better
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Line manager and my team are very supportive, always willing to answer questions and share knowledge and they made my start very comfortable
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
University is different for everyone in terms of experience for me it is kind of figure it out as you go a long as there are many skills and competencies that can only be developed with time as it is not an easy course.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
Uni is only really helping me with knowledge of electrical engineering and at the moment it is not really directly benefitting my role as what I do at work isn't really linked to uni/ we have not covered it yet.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
Yes we have office socials but I live quite far so can rarely attend as it would make my day often 12+ hours

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Arup to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Great company to work for in terms of opportunities and personal development, it is a really friendly environment and I could be speaking to associates or other apprentices and you are still spoken to with respect. Even when you go to other offices people are always willing to have a chat and ask what you are working on.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Arup?
Make sure you be yourself and ensure that you align with company values. This was something that really helped me in my application as I actually wanted to work here due to company values rather than just mass producing applications to different companies. Interviewers will clearly be able to differentiate between those who want to be at Arup compared to those who have just entered a half hearted application
