Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Really good for the most part, but takes some time to be able to get responsibility and in the area that you want to work in. Takes personal branding and building your own network to get the type of work you want.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I definitely enjoy the programme, I've managed to learn a lot in a short space of time. I think especially because people are always ready to help!

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes - all my technical project management skills I have picked up like risk management, change management, governance etc were new skills I learned. It also helped me develop my soft skills further which I already had but was able to now apply to projects

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
It's mostly organised and structured. We joined as a cohort and had buddies, line managers and optionally could have a mentor. I have also forged relationships with colleagues which I could learn from informally too.
I've rated this 4 because it terms of project work, although you are supported in getting work, on occasion there isn't enough to do because projects are peaks and troughs and sometimes in those quieter periods it is harder to find work.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Very supported. always able to ask questions, specific to university course and also just in general. there is always so much happening and lots of options to receive support.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
A good amount of support. Certain tutors are very very supportive and go above and beyond to support trying to pass the qualification such as spending extra time, reading assignments or setting up extra calls. I find sometimes the generic teaching to be a little hard to follow because it's very heavy loaded - but when I ask questions and clarifications, I will always get it!
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
100%. A lot of the learning I do can usually be used on the job the next day (literally). For example, I was working on coming up with a simple process. When we discussed it at uni, they were able to give some guidance based on the learning we were doing which I was then able to implement.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
yes, lots and lots. I've managed to organise some too. sports, book clubs, community groups like connect race and muslim chapter which I've been able to partake in to connect with others like me

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Arup to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It's an amazing organisation to work for but you have to be proactive and take the opportunities as they come. Especially joining straight after sixth form, it means having to adjust to a new type of life. That being said - they are very aware of apprentices and the scheme and therefore they support that transition really well. Many colleagues have a good understanding of the apprenticeship specifically because the organisation takes on many so there is the infrastructure to support apprentices.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Arup?
Genuinely bring your personality and whole self. One of the reasons I think I was employed is because during the interview, I was able to bring my personality as well as my knowledge. This is because Arup really drives on being people oriented and it's apparent when walking around the office how nice and friendly everyone is. Especially as an apprentice, they are very aware that you do not come with a lot of industry knowledge, it's the showing of your enthusiasm and methodology of thinking that supports being employed here.
