Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Currently, as an Apprentice, I am learning the theory and practical aspect of the role for the Process Operator in Suez Tees Valley Lines 4/5. This involves completing internal training modules, as well as the coursework for my apprenticeship via Middlesbrough College. A day usually starts off with a handover from the previous shift, followed by completion of routes that are split into 3 sections. These are visual inspections and readings taken from around the plant, to ensure it is operating as it should. It is also a great way to learn the theory of the process, and finding your way around. Then, there are weekly and monthly tasks that are to be carried out, either on days or night shift. There is also a role within the team, as the Desk operator. Usually, the 12 hours for the shift are shared across the operators. This is a role were you are sat in front of the screens, monitoring the condition of the plant, adjusting flows as the plant operates.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I am thoroughly enjoying my time, after starting as an apprentice in November. Since joining, the support I have received from every department, and everyone, has been surprising. I find there is a perfect balance of apprenticeship work as well as operator training. The whole training module and the way training is carried out, is excellent. Coming into the role, I had 0 knowledge on this sector, coming from IT. With this in mind, the company and especially my shift have been extra supportive in teaching me new things and providing me with any equipment and resources I require, to complete both my training and apprenticeship coursework.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Coming into this role with 0 experience or knowledge, I am developing many new skills on a day to day basis. A couple to mention would be:
- Communication (via radio or handover). This is important to inform and update peoples knowledge on the current conditions of the plant. Constant communication is established to the control room whilst on plant.
- Using tools/equipment - I am not very experienced in the use of hand tools, where as this role requires me to use them in some parts - this is particularly useful.
- Operating plant specific equipment like waste cranes, control panels, etc.
- Importance of plant safety and safety of others. Following Safe Working Procedures.
- Training (Confined Space Self Rescue, with future ones to carry out, like Forklift, Harness, etc.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The programme that I have been put on, at Tees Valley Lines 4 and 5 has been great. From the very start, the programme was outlined to me in detail and the methods taken have helped. This stems from a week with various different departments, getting to know them and what their role does on a daily basis. This helped break the ice but also how we all work alongside each other to achieve the goals that we set out. From an operators perspective, I have been given excellent support from my shift team, the other shift teams and the Operations Manager, Kevin Clewes.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I cannot speak highly enough on the support I have received so far.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
The training provided is internal, and as previously mentioned, I have no doubt that I will pass my apprenticeship due to the quality and quantity of the training given to me by Suez.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
Without the training, I wouldn't be able to carry out any tasks. Although I am learning them over a prolonged period, I can help out with tasks for my shift team. I require this training to become a successful operator.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Only being here for a short time, I have yet to take part in any activities but I am aware that they do happen.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Suez Recycling and Recovery UK to a friend?
Yes
Why?
From previously mentioned, the support and morale in the workplace is very good. I feel welcome and supported, but with a drive to improve myself as a operator but also a person. The shift pattern also played a huge part in my decision as I can spend more time with family, especially my son.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Suez Recycling and Recovery UK?
It is a big commitment in the sense of learning to be an operator, as well as completing the apprenticeship programme. However, it is not overwhelming and the biggest advice I would give is that there are no stupid questions. The people here support you by all means.
Take no shortcuts, you are part of a hardworking team.
