Company Research Analyst Intern Review

We attend a morning meeting where analysts will give any updates on their covered companies. The job is then flexible for us to choose what we want to do. Analysts tend to read any macro news that has happened overnight. Analysts write reports and create financial models (which are forecasted for the future) so they can come up with a valuation for the stock (which gives them a buy or sell recommendation). Overall, the job is extremely exciting.

At the start, we were given a lot of support from managers who essentially told us what they wanted us to do. However, when we started looking into a specific company (which was our end of internship project), we were left to take ownership of the experience and really make it our own, which was nice. Overall, there was a good distribution of responsibility given and guidance given and not having as much guidance nearer the end definitely helped develop my skills more.

My research skills have definitely been developed throughout the internship. This is in addition to my resilience for finding data from companies as this was especially hard for unlisted (private) companies. Working in a corporate office environment was something very different compared to university and being on the job definitely let me experience that first-hand (how working relationships work, teamwork etc.). Analytical skills were also developed a lot during the internship and trying to pick out interesting and new things to say about companies.

We received a lot of support from everyone in the department, not just our respective teams. Everyone was extremely friendly in the office and willing to help whenever we need some. People were also willing to give up time to go on coffee chats with us and give us advice about the future/jobs/what it's like working in the industry. The managers in my team gave me especially good support and advice throughout the whole internship.

The company culture and general atmosphere in the office was extremely positive. Everyone was always lovely and welcoming. This was felt throughout the whole experience and it really helped me to enjoy it as it was one less thing to think about. I don't think anyone would have a problem fitting into their teams (and the office as a whole) as everyone is very willing to help and have a chat at any time.

The entire internship was extremely enjoyable, it was great to experience what it would be like to work in a corporate environment and also, an investment bank. Actually going into an office and working for a few months gives a much clearer idea as to what the everyday job is like and the culture of the workplace (this is certainly something that you don't get from university career events!!). The social activities planned by HR were also good.
