Fire Engineering Apprentice Review

On a day to day basis my job role includes working with wider design teams for different construction projects, for example Hospitals, residential, office spaces and others. To ensure that what is/was designed and constructed is fire safe and complies with relevant guidance. This included producing design markups for the design team to review, writing fire strategy's for buildings throughout there RIBA stages. This can also include doing site visits and meetings with the wider design team.

The structure is very organised, I have a 2 week block at university every couple of months in this time I am not expected to work as lectures at university are from 9-5 Monday to Friday.

I have felt very supported with my employer, I have a weekly meeting with ,y line manager on work load and what I have worked on throughout the week. As well as this all of the employees I have worked with have been extremely supportive and happy to help when needed. They are also good at providing feedback of what I have done well on what needs to improved or what could have been done differently.
The employers also have multiple workshops for apprentices/graduates/new employees to help them transition into the company or help with questions you may have on technical content or questions for the company in general.

The training provider are also supportive, and other support for many different things including technical content, or quires on how the university course is done.

The content learned in university helps me in my job role as it provides a lot of the scientific reasons for what we do at work. This helps when understanding why things may be done in certain way at work for example our training course gave us a lecture on the history of fire engineering and how guidance has changed over the years. This could be beneficial when looking at at older buildings to understand why they are built in a certain way or why guidance still continues to change now.

The company was very welcoming when first starting and offer many opportunities to get to know the people you work with. You are supported by your line manager and a 'buddy' system, this is someone who you can ask questions to and they help you settle in. As well as this you also get given someone who supports you in terms of admin and adjusting into the company and university.
Within the fire engineering industry they are well respected and work in a a large range of project sectors in the industry, this is beneficial as you can start on more simple projects when starting and the more you learn the more complex projects you can work on for example one of my first projects I worked on was a single story school. And I am now starting to work on more complex building like hospitals or student accommodation buildings.
They have also given me the chance to see real fire tests being done for projects, and visit factories making products that are used for fire safety. This helps to understand what it is we do as a fire engineer how things work practically.
The company is also well respected in the industry and offer research to come up with new ways in creating engineered solutions.
