Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role as a fire engineer is to engineer, provide judgment, assist, and consult regarding fire safety and fire engineering in buildings. this links into the riba stages of architecture and assisting architects and the design team through their design to ensure compliance with the building regulations, and then to the construction stages to ensure suitable installation of active and passive fire protection systems on site, in buildings, and lastly to assist in safety of the built environment, whether providing guidance for existing buildings etc.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

It is a fantastic mix of education and real life experience that will set you up well for future work and life and it has been a very enjoyable last year and a half, and i am looking forward to my future within the company and growth into new positions and roles as i progress in the field of fire engineering.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

i have developed lots of new skills ranging from time management, writing skills, to technical and engineering skills. including a lot of problem solving, maths and engineering, and communication/consulting to clients and design teams.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

Very organised, as an apprentice the workload is managed to ensure sufficient time for study, and we have regular university block releases and time for exams to ensure our degree goes smoothly whilst working a full time role as a fire engineer consultant.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

There is lots of great support from my mentor and line manager as well as colleagues with everyone within OFR being very easy to approach and all willing to share knowledge and experience to grow as a company. on an individual scale my line manager and mentor additionally support me in achieving my own personal goals within the field through individual goals set and tasks setup which help me achieve this goal. this is paired alongside our companies graduate development program, and technical institute , which teaches consulting skills and fire engineering, and this is provided for all graduates and apprentices to help them develop their skills.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Uclan is always prepared to help and the staff are very nice. as the apprenticeship programme is in early stages i had anticipated a few hiccups in the process and programme, but it has gone very smoothly.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

the fire engineering course at uclan reflects very well in what i do day-to-day in my job and helps provide that background and fundamental knowledge for my role, as well as for more technical areas, providing the necessary knowledge to approach harder fields such as computational fluid dynamics or finite element analysis within the fire engineering field.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

OFR as a company are very passionate about staff relations and thus provides the staff with many opportunities for team building and social activities, including playing sports or attending proffessional networking events with the team including conferences and CPDs which are all supported by OFR, with OFR additionally presenting their own CPDs and conducting their own research which is very inspirational for the universities technical modules.

Why?
It has been a great experience in the last year and a half, not just from the people I have met and worked with, but including the quality of training and effort that is put into helping me as an apprentice and all the other new starters at the company.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to OFR Consultants?
My advice is to have a definite willingness to learn, as admittedly apprenticeships are hard, however, if you start prepared and open minded to learning new things an apprenticeship is the right route for you.
