Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I manage my own workload and, therefore, my own day. I am aligned with different teams who provide work, rotating through various departments across the business so I can experience all areas every 6 months to 1 year. In addition to receiving work from my aligned teams, I am able to seek out work elsewhere in the business. I draft documents, communicate with clients, attend trials, and even help out at local schools and events, working with students considering a career in law or an apprenticeship.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I thoroughly enjoy my time working at Addleshaw Goddard and always look forward to coming to work. This is mainly due to the people I work with—everyone is eager to help you progress in your career, and the opportunities are endless.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Over the past two years with AG, I have developed a wide range of transferable skills that I will carry with me as my career progresses. I was a novice when I started as a paralegal apprentice—now I can professionally communicate directly with clients unsupervised, draft legal documents, run training sessions for my colleagues, and I have even had the opportunity to draft legal wording that was subsequently used in official documentation issued by the firm.
In addition to technical skills, I have gained a plethora of soft skills that will be pertinent as my career continues. I have learned resilience through constantly rotating around the business and being introduced to new teams and people. I have also learned how to make the most of feedback to improve my personal brand and enhance my apprenticeship experience.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
There is a clear structure to my apprenticeship. I have every Monday off, designated as my study day, during which I attend online lectures and catch up on any university work or reading set for that week. It has been made clear to us that under no circumstances are we to work on anything other than our studies on our designated study day. I found that this was really respected and adhered to by other members of the firm, and I never felt pressured to dedicate more of my time to work over my studies. We were also given a further 5 days of annual leave designated as study leave to assist us during exam seasons.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
One of the best things about being an apprentice at Addleshaw Goddard is the level of support and guidance you receive. We have regular check-ins with our line managers, and monthly apprentice calls with HR and the programme leaders to raise any queries. We also have an internal apprentice society that meets regularly, where we can discuss any issues and offer support to each other. In addition, we have apprentice conferences and socials, which allow us to interact with other apprentices across the business, building a really strong network of support.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
BPP offer an online forum where you can ask questions about the course and coaches can respond. As well as this, you are assigned a coach that you can individually liaise with whenever you need.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
A positive aspect of the apprenticeship qualification is that it directly ties into the work you do. All learning is relevant and tailored to your role, which enables you to work more effectively, efficiently, and to a higher standard.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are a variety of extra-curricular activities to get involved in at Addleshaw Goddard. These include social activities, sports teams, and professional networking events. Apprentices and employees can participate in regular social events organised by the firm, such as team outings and firm-wide celebrations. There are also opportunities to join sports teams, which help foster teamwork and a sense of community. In addition, the firm hosts and encourages attendance at professional networking events, both internally and externally, to help build relationships across the business and the wider legal community. Most recently, I attended a "Next Generation of Lawyers" networking event hosted by AG, which invited other junior legal professionals in the area to get together. We had a fascinating talk on AI in the legal field and were encouraged to network. These activities provide a well-rounded experience and help to develop both personal and professional skills.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Addleshaw Goddard to a friend?
Yes
Why?
My time at Addleshaw Goddard has shown me what a career path should look like: clear progression, supportive colleagues (irrespective of their level), and endless opportunities to learn and grow in a professional sense. I have no intention of leaving AG and hope to have a long successful career with them.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Addleshaw Goddard?
My advice to anyone interested in applying to Addleshaw Goddard is to be authentically yourself. AG welcomes and encourages individuality, and believes that listening to all ideas leads to better outcomes. If you want to be part of a supportive and friendly culture that champions its junior members, AG is definitely a place you should consider applying to.
