Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
My Role as a site engineer involves
- supervising daily construction activities
- Inspecting work quality
- Enforcing safety protocols through documentation
- Ensure regulatory compliance
- Solving technical problems
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
2/5
Assuming the program consists of the entire apprenticeship, I enjoyed the Level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) because it included a three-month block release from work, allowing me to focus on academic coursework and exams. After that, I returned to my role as a site engineer without needing to work outside of regular hours.
In contrast, the Level 6 program has been quite a struggle. We have one week of delivery each month and spend the remaining three weeks back on-site throughout the regular semester. The one week dedicated to delivery involves pure instruction, meaning that I have to complete all coursework and exam revision during evenings and weekends.
While I enjoy my work, the combined workload from the project, university, and the pursuit of Chartered Engineer (IEng) status has caused a significant amount of stress, particularly in my final year at university.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learned invaluable skills from my experience in the construction sector, especially on-site.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
(Refer to previous overview) The program needs improved organisation to give apprentices sufficient time to revise and complete their coursework. While I understand that some contributions outside of work are necessary, it is essential to achieve a better work-life balance.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
I am torn on this question, as I haven't had any additional support beyond the mandatory check-ins so far. I recently had a bad burnout (Now diagnosed migraine sufferer) due to the stress of work, university, and chartered (IEng) membership as a combination.
The work team had acknowledged the stress and had offered help, although I still think the apprenticeship programme team should be made aware of it
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
I receive a call quarterly to check how things are.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
The qualification will allow me to get IENG and later CENG with the ICE.
Some subjects help with the theoretical knowledge on the project
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
We do have some project outings and socials - the company does have networking events

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAM to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I believe the people at BAM are kind and genuinely care about your best interests. However, there is a significant gap between the project team and the apprenticeship team, which has led to confusion and frustration.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?
Apprenticeships at BAM offer an excellent pathway into the construction sector. However, I would like to caution you about the additional workload and the time commitment required outside of regular working hours. This can disrupt your work-life balance.
