Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
The role primarily involves software testing, and planning for testing which is to be done in the future. This includes black box testing, an increasing focus on automation, and looking at where testing can be improved.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
The programme did involve a lot of hard work, and it was largely down to myself to ensure I was able to get enough variety in my work to meet the apprenticeship criteria since some teams are able to meet the requirements better than others. However, the apprenticeship programme also allowed me to be part of many different teams and develop a lot of useful connections with talented people I would not have otherwise, facilitating a wider growth of skills and knowledge than if I had remained in the same area.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I came into the apprenticeship not having any professional background in software testing. Now that I have finished, I have gained many important skills, such as data preparation and creation, testing types, how to write automated scripts and develop test suites from scratch, project management, greater communication skills, and many more. This is one of the best things about the programme, since growth of skills is highly prioritised.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
In the first few months, it took a while for the programme to really begin, since most of the work around me was already underway and therefore not something I could be easily included in. However, once I began being included in my team’s workload, I was able to meet a lot of the requirements for the apprenticeship early on which my learning mentor helped me with. My manager was also extremely helpful in ensuring I was able to meet the right people who could get me the work I needed later on to demonstrate I had the necessary experience to pass. The main issue from the apprenticeship provider’s side is the documentation and naming for things was often outdated and confusing to new starters. My learning mentor was able to clear this up, but it did initially make figuring out how to structure my submissions more difficult.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
This is another very strong area for the programme. My employer was very supportive of my development journey and I was able to learn from the people around me to develop the skills I needed. While the workload for the apprenticeship and the role combined was occasionally a lot to handle, I was also given time to prepare for exams and courses when needed so that I was not going in unprepared.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
My learning mentor provided me with support whenever I needed it, and was very helpful throughout the whole process. However, communication from the training provider in general was not always very transparent, and getting support from them outside of my learning mentor was sometimes difficult. However, most of the questions I had which actually mattered to me, I was simply able to put to my learning mentor who would be able to provide me what I needed.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The qualification did encourage me to explore more areas than I perhaps would have if I had not undertaken it, and it has helped me demonstrate that I have put in the work required to become skilled in my role. However, learning and development is also something which is already expected of employees in my organisation. So it is not so much that the qualification helps me to perform better, but that I was able to gain a qualification alongside doing things which help me to perform better which I most likely would have been exploring anyway. Still, the apprenticeship was a very good way into the organisation that allowed me to start in a position where people around me were especially happy to help me develop the skills I needed.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are plenty of networking events and related meetings both in person and online available to colleagues, usually several per month in a variety of areas. A benefit of being part of a company the size of LBG is also that there are clubs and groups for all kinds of topics. It can be difficult to find these at first since they are not always promoted especially well, but there is a very wide variety available.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Lloyds Banking Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would and have recommended the organisation to a friend. The company is an excellent place to learn and develop new skills. The people there are talented and the culture promotes people helping others. The progression opportunities are also very good.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Lloyds Banking Group?
My main advice is that while the company is a fantastic opportunity to grow new skills, this is something you have to take ownership of and want for yourself. It can feel ‘sink or swim’ at certain points, where you will need to upskill yourself to be able to meet the needs of the workload and the rest of the team. However, the resources are provided to do this as there are thousands of learning materials available for free, and the people are very supportive of helping others to develop new skills. So long as you take the time to ensure that you are improving and learning new things, the development opportunities are very high.
