Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I complete various 6 month placements that support work that helps make London’s transport network greener and more responsible. I get involved in a range of projects, from tracking sustainability performance and looking at environmental data to helping buildings reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality. The role gives me hands on experience working with different teams across TfL, learning how sustainability is built into everyday operations and long‑term decisions, while developing my skills and knowledge in the sustainability and environment sector.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I very much enjoy the programme and think its very well made. Obviously with the nature of having placements there will be placements I enjoy more than others however there is always something extracurricular you can do alongside work such as volunteering that you can also put energy into.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learned a lot when it comes to software as I am now much more confident in programmes like Excel and PowerBI. I also think the abilities to communicate naturally and work well in a team setting becomes more effective as it is a corporate job where this is expected of you.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
It is very organised. We complete 6 month placements in different areas of the business and complete work from these. We do get to choose our placements which I think is an added bonus.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
We have a line manager/sponsor that stays the same throughout the apprenticeship and then a placement manager that varies with each placement. There is always someone to reach out to.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
Kingston University can be unresponsive sometimes, which is difficult when you can only chase up in person when you are attending once a week. I also find that if you have any issues you really have to push for these to get sorted, and sometimes they don't at all.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
The free student ISEP membership is really helpful as this can normally be quite expensive, but the content that we learn about at uni I find doesn't really overlap with what we do at work.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
At TfL we have the Graduate, Apprentice, Intern committee (GAIC) which organise different activities, socials and site visits around the business. We have the Sustainability Network where there are meetings to learn more about environment/policies or visit places on the network that have been made more sustainable. There are also sports teams that meet around once a week.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Transport for London to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Compared to many other apprenticeship schemes, TfL offers better pay and genuinely values its apprentices, treating us the same as everyone else in the organisation. There are loads of development opportunities to get involved in, which makes it a great place to learn and grow. On top of that, the working environment is supportive and enjoyable. The free travel card for you and someone you live with is a huge bonus as well as it saves a lot of money and makes commuting or going out around London so much easier!
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Transport for London?
Do your research into the company's values, familiarise yourself with the three pillars of sustainability (if that's the scheme you're interested in) and do not try to be someone you aren't (they can see right through it)
