Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
As Business Manager, I provide strategic and operational leadership across a wide portfolio of high‑profile frontline services. My role focuses on performance and risk management, governance and committee support, programme and project delivery, and partnership working across the Council and with external stakeholders.
I have line management responsibility for three posts within the service area and for a partnership. I also act as the Strategic Lead for a Partnership, providing senior leadership, setting direction, and overseeing governance, delivery and stakeholder engagement in a complex and politically sensitive area of work.
Day to day, the role involves working closely with senior leaders to provide assurance, clear performance insight and structured decision‑making, while remaining hands‑on in managing risk, resolving complex issues and supporting services through change. The role requires strong leadership, coordination across services and partners, and the ability to balance long‑term strategic priorities with immediate operational demands.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy the programme to a large extent. It is challenging and demanding at times, but it is also engaging and relevant to my role, and I value the opportunity to apply learning directly to real work issues.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Yes, I have developed a number of skills through the programme. In particular, I’ve strengthened my reflective practice, strategic leadership thinking and ability to apply theory to complex, real‑world situations. I’ve also developed greater confidence in using evidence, data and structured frameworks to inform decision‑making and conversations with senior leaders.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme is generally well organised and clearly structured, with learning materials and expectations set out in advance. At times, timelines can be tight alongside work commitments, but overall the structure supports progression and application to practice.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I receive a good level of support from my employer, including encouragement to undertake the programme, flexibility where possible, and opportunities to apply learning directly to my role. Competing operational priorities can limit time at times, but overall the support is strong and positive.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I receive a good level of support from my training provider. Guidance is available when needed, expectations are clear, and feedback is constructive. At times support can feel limited by competing demands or timing, but overall it is accessible and supports progression through the programme.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The qualification supports me well in performing my role by strengthening my strategic thinking, reflective practice and ability to apply theory to complex, real‑world challenges. The work‑based nature of the programme means learning can be applied directly to my day‑to‑day responsibilities, improving the quality of decision‑making, leadership conversations and partnership working.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yes, there are opportunities to get involved beyond day‑to‑day work, including professional networking, development activity and cross‑service engagement. While formal social or sports activities can be limited by workload, there are good opportunities to build networks and collaborate across the organisation.
