Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Overview
I was a Supply Chain & Logistics Apprentice within GSK R&D, rotating through Cell & Gene Therapy Logistics, Global Clinical Trial Logistics, Manufacturing, Packaging and Clinical Trial Supply Management. The apprenticeship combined hands‑on operational tasks with formal training in GMP/GxP, inventory management systems and quality frameworks to prepare me for roles in clinical supply and warehouse operations.
Day‑to‑day activities (typical)
Perform warehouse tasks: receiving, putaway, picking, packing and staging packed kits for shipment, following GMP and site SOPs.
Operate and monitor cold‑chain equipment: verify pre‑conditioning, temperature logs, and escalate excursions.
Use Inventory Management Systems: update locations, complete pack records, reconcile inventory and support cycle counts.
Support packaging and manufacturing lines: prepare materials, assist with batch sampling, label application and pack completion.
Prepare clinical shipment documentation: create labels, check regulatory paperwork, coordinate couriers and book shipments.
Quality and compliance activities: log observations/NIEs, assist in investigations, support deviations and change controls under QA supervision.
Liaise with stakeholders: coordinate with QA, production, clinical teams and 3PLs to resolve issues and ensure on‑time delivery.
Continuous improvement and learning: participate in training, complete assigned projects (e.g., stocktakes, process improvements) and shadow senior staff.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy the programme a lot. The rotations, hands‑on responsibility and learning opportunities have been highly rewarding and have accelerated my development.
That said, workload management can be difficult and stressful at times due to competing priorities and tight deadlines

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, I've learned a wide range of new skills. The apprenticeship accelerated my development in ways school couldn’t, giving practical, on‑the‑job experience and responsibility.
Key skills gained:
Technical: COMET/PMD inventory management, cold‑chain handling, packaging operations and GMP‑compliant documentation.
Quality & compliance: raising/managing deviations, participating in investigations, change control and incident reporting.
Operational: inventory reconciliation, cycle counts, shipment preparation and coordination with 3PLs.
Analytical: root‑cause analysis, data review for stock accuracy and KPI reporting.
Soft skills: stakeholder communication, time‑management under pressure, prioritisation and cross‑functional collaboration.
These skills have made me confident and operationally effective in clinical supply logistics.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
An apprenticeship manager and a day to day line manager for support and guidance. The programme follows structure rotations where you have day to day responsibillites.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
You recieve as much support as you require, which can either be lots or if you would rather not they will leave you alone. One day off every week for university studies
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
One day off every week for university studies and pay for travel to university.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
Applying the theory from university at work allows you to progress much quicker and increases your understanding becuase of the practical application. Everything i do at university applies to my business in some way. Most of my coursework is to find out how my company follows specific academic theories and critically evaluate.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes there are lots of extra curricular activities depending on what you enjoy doing

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend GSK to a friend?
Yes
Why?
GSK is an excellent employer for apprentices, offering a well‑structured programme with strong mentoring and formal development that is balanced by real responsibility; apprentices are treated like full‑time employees and entrusted with meaningful tasks that rapidly build practical experience and accelerate career progression. The company fosters a supportive community through an active apprenticeship network and frequent social events that help integration and relationship‑building, and the competitive remuneration and benefits reflect the value placed on apprentices. Overall, it’s a highly recommended programme for anyone seeking hands‑on experience and fast‑tracked development in supply chain and logistics.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to GSK?
Make your “Why GSK” specific, evidence‑based and directly tied to the role rather than a generic compliment. Hiring managers want to know why you chose GSK over any other employer and what unique value you’ll bring. Reference a particular GSK focus or priority (for example clinical trial logistics, patient safety or sustainability or becuase they are a market leader in cancer therapies), link it to a relevant skill or achievement from your experience (e.g., “led a full‑warehouse cycle count that improved inventory accuracy by X%”), and show how the company’s culture or development opportunities fit how you work and learn. Keep it concise and memorable, two to three sentences maximum.
