Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I am an apprentice civil engineer which for me at work involves at lot of surveying/site engineer work. Depending on the task at hand at the time, I could be doing setting out or taking levels (which is what I have done the most of) using the dumpy level or GPS or, I could also be helping with things such as writing reports.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy the team i work with and the support i have available to me if needed. I enjoy learning on site and the fact everyone is also willing to help me with with my university work also.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have developed my surveying skills and also learnt some new methods and techniques for example using the GPS. I have also learnt other new things such as how to write ITPs, carry out duct pit surveys and how to complete and write up a dilapidation survey. I have also branched into also helping out with pre-construction which allows me insight into what else goes into a job before my job role.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

I would say it is well organised as I know when and where I'm in work, when I attend universities, when I have my reviews with university and the early careers manager from work and so on.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

I feel i get a lot of support from various people at work who all help to provide the best for me.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The curriculum lead at my training provider is supportive of the apprentices checking we are all okay and on track.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I would say it varies on the unit were are covering but there are definitely some units which provide me with knowledge which allows me to help understand different terminologies / techniques used at work.
