Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Right now, I’m working on procuring the mechanical equipment for a new-build school, making sure everything meets the spec, budget, and is ordered on time. This involves reviewing submittals, speaking with suppliers, and getting orders in place.
After that, I’ll move onto site in an engineering role, where I’ll be overseeing the installation, tracking progress, and making sure everything is being done safely and to the right standard

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

It’s good. There’s quite a lot of design work in the programme, which I don’t do loads of in my day-to-day job, but it’s still really useful as it helps me understand and check the designs and calculations from consultants

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I’ve developed my technical and maths skills through university, and at work I’ve improved my communication and problem-solving skills, especially when dealing with different people and issues on projects

How well organised/structured is your programme?

It’s alright, fairly well organised, but it can get quite busy. There are times when a lot of uni work and deadlines fall in the same week as work, which can be a bit hard to juggle.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I get a good amount of support from my employer. We have regular apprenticeship catch-up meetings, and they’re really interested in making sure I’m up to date with my work and keeping on track.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I receive good support from my training provider. They provide clear guidance on assignments and deadlines. We also have regular tripartite reviews, which helps keep everyone aligned and makes sure I’m staying on track with my progress.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

It helps quite well. There’s a lot more maths and design work in the qualification than I do day-to-day at work, but it’s still really useful as it helps me understand and check the designs when I’m procuring equipment.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Not really, there aren’t many regular extra-curricular activities. We do have “Give a Day” where we’re given two days to do charity work, and sometimes people choose to do that together in groups.

Yes
Why?
It’s a good place to work and they offer good support and benefits for apprentices, so it’s a nice environment to learn and develop.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Tilbury Douglas?
I’d say it’s a good place to start if you’re looking to get into the construction industry. You’ll get good experience early on and a chance to build your skills while you figure out what areas you enjoy.
