Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
My role is based within Bioanalysis where I am involved with many different modalities and exciting science. Day-to-day I independently plan experiments before heading into the lab. Once the experiment is finished, I analyse the data and write-up my results. My experiments usually last around five hours (in and out of the lab). It is a well-balanced mix of office work and lab work. One day a week is reserved for university studies towards my degree in Bioscience with Digital Technologies.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

5/5
My programme is perfect for me; it’s engaging and has allowed me to grow and develop so much as a scientist. I am always busy and learning new things, there are so many courses available to work through when I have some free time, e.g., coding courses. When looking back to the beginning of my programme I can see that I’ve developed massively and I’m so proud.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
I’ve developed so many areas; a big one for me is presenting and public speaking since I’ve always struggled with this, but I’ve had such a wonderful experience of developing these skills. I was able to attend a course which focused on these skills and have successfully presented to small teams at work in addition to bigger audiences at outreach events. I’ve been able to practice my lab skills almost everyday and I’m always learning new things. I’ve grown as an independent scientist in every aspect, from experimentation to scientific writing and data analysis.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

5/5
It’s organised well, I always have objectives to achieve, and a plan for the following months. I am constantly immersed in a project and have worked with multiple team members and other teams. The university work is structured well and all organised in a single website that’s easy to use and shows deadlines and workflows clearly.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
My employer is incredibly understanding and clearly wants me to get the most out of my apprenticeship. They are supportive and engaged with my studies and are always there for me if I need any help.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

5/5
I receive great support from the university, especially from my success manager and course leads. I have reviews with my success manger every eight weeks to catch-up and make sure I’m hitting my objectives. Additionally, due to a health condition, I have a learning support plan put in place which allows me deadlines and extra time for exams and assignments. They are always available to email for any questions and respond quickly.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

5/5
I learn a lot of scientific theory during my university studies which helps me understand the context behind my projects and therefore to understand the patients better. Additionally, I can practice presentations with my university, and I receive feedback which I can take onboard to help me professionally.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

5/5
There are endless networking events, and it helps that the building is built for collaboration and so many of us are situated in one place. I have taken part in many team sport activities including football and netball and there's also a gym and volunteering opportunities.
