Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
My role right now as an apprentice is to continue my college work as this is full time. I would say that outside of lesson my primary workload stems from my foundation degree work which is at a level 4 now. When I go into my worksite (BMW Plant Hams Hall) I shadow higher year apprentices and full time staff members who are of the same/ similar apprenticeship or full time role. I find my time in plant valuable as it presents me with an opportunity to learn about my role, my worksite and network with my future colleagues.
I often find my time at college somewhat dull and often wasted as the level 2 course that I am completing 4 days a week is sometimes poorly manages and some subjects haven't felt entirely relevant to my goals.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I overall do find my apprenticeship enjoyable. My peers in first year are all sociable and I feel like what I am doing within my level 4 foundation degree, and what I do when I am at plant, is relevant to my goals and potential future career. The subjects I cover within this foundation degree are all new content for me so my days at college feel rewarding and beneficial.
Unfortunately these opportunities are in minority compared to my 4 days a week on a level 2 course. The level 2 course I am doing is almost entirely content I feel like I would already know as I completed level 3 Engineering. This means I do feel like I waste my time at college where the teaching and content are not up to my expectations for a degree apprenticeship.
There has also been a distinct lack of communication from the college to us regarding admin such as smart accessor or end of unit paperwork such as an X200 form. This can be frustrating as it should not have to be a point of focus for us to figure this out.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Yes. I have had a chance to use a variety of hand tool and machines such as a hydraulic press, mill, lathe and pillar drill. These machines are all examples of new skills for me. Another key skill that I have been developing is Uni style assignment work for my level 4 which I received support for from one of my lecturers.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The organisation is dissatisfactory to an extent. The college had one lesson where for an entire block or more, we were put in a spare room full of waste and told that we had to complete assignments based on how we would apply business management techniques to clean it. This was a complete waste of time and I felt that it was in absolutely no way relevant to my apprenticeship, career goals or interests. I am not sure why this situation occurred and it is the worst example I have to mention in terms of disorganisation. That being said we were also placed on a study day for four weeks where we require to be in college but work on our assignments on our laptops. This was annoying as the reason behind it was that there were no available lecturers to take us for the subjects we were yet to complete. This left many of us completing our 1hr+ commutes just to complete work for a whole day that could have been done in a couple of hours at home.
I will credit the company, BMW, as when we have gone into plant they have supported organisation between apprentice year groups to ensure that myself and the other first years had somewhere to go. The college lecturers have also mostly been organised in progressing through required work to complete units. We are also normally notified in good time about any changes to timetable or events we should attend.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
We are able to contact multiple managers at any time and we receive quick responses. The support from our employers falls short when it comes to arranged meetings, block reviews or opportunities to ask questions related to our apprenticeship. We have not had any block reviews where our work at college has been reviewed since our apprenticeship started.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
Within my level 2 AME course, the support is adequate and I am able to progress through my lessons with minimal issue. With my level 4 units, which I think matter more, the support falls short from the lecturers. With some subjects I am able to ask for support but in some the lecturers have not been particularly useful or knowledgeable. In these subjects I feel like we have been left to "figure it out".
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The qualification I am completing over my whole course is very relevant to control systems and I believe I will utilise content from it in my job. The level 2 course is useful in applicable practical skills however some of the theory content is not entirely relevant.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
2/5
There are some options however not organised by BMW. Apprentices in higher years are currently asking for more networking events such as plant visits.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BMW Group UK to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I feel like the apprenticeship is a great way to earn a qualification, gain work experience and meet new people. Even if there are flaws in the organisation and support I think the apprenticeship is a great way to enter the professional world.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group UK?
Apply early and put in 100% effort to every application stage as only 1% of applicants got offered an interview.
