Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am a Public Sector Sales Apprentice at Softcat, supporting schools, colleges, Multi‑Academy Trusts and charities with their IT and technology requirements. My role combines account management, sales support and customer engagement alongside completing my apprenticeship qualification. I work closely with customers, internal teams and specialist consultants to help deliver solutions that add value and meet budget and procurement requirements.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy my role as a Public Sector Sales Apprentice at Softcat. The role is both challenging and rewarding, as it allows me to be involved in real customer interactions while developing my commercial and technical understanding of the IT industry. I particularly enjoy speaking with customers, building relationships, and feeling trusted to support schools, colleges and charities with meaningful technology decisions.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
es, throughout my apprenticeship at Softcat I have learnt new skills and significantly developed existing ones.
One of the main skills I have developed is communication. Through regular customer interactions via phone, email and Teams, I have gained confidence when speaking with new contacts, handling objections and communicating professionally with a range of stakeholders. I have learnt how to adapt my communication style depending on whether I am speaking to IT technicians, business managers or finance contacts.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
My apprenticeship programme at Softcat is well organised and clearly structured. From the outset, there was a clear induction process that introduced me to the company, my role, the tools I would be using, and what was expected of me during the programme. This helped me settle in quickly and understand how my role fits within the wider business.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a high level of support from my employer throughout my apprenticeship at Softcat. From the start of the programme, there has been clear guidance around expectations, responsibilities and development goals, which has helped me build confidence in my role.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive a good level of support from my training provider while working towards my apprenticeship qualifications. The support is structured and focuses on helping me understand the course requirements, manage my workload, and stay on track with assessments.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I feel that my apprenticeship qualification supports my role to a good extent and has a positive impact on my day‑to‑day performance. The qualification helps reinforce the knowledge, skills and behaviours that are required within a sales and account management role at Softcat, particularly in the public sector.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are many extra‑curricular opportunities available at Softcat, both socially and professionally, which encourages involvement beyond day‑to‑day work.
From a social perspective, Softcat regularly organises team socials, office events and informal activities, helping to build strong relationships across teams and locations. Apprentices are also encouraged to get involved in wider company events, which helps with integration into the business and meeting colleagues outside of immediate teams.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Softcat to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend Softcat to a friend because it offers a genuine opportunity to learn, develop and progress, particularly through its apprenticeship and early‑careers programmes.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Softcat?
My main advice would be to be yourself, show enthusiasm, and demonstrate a genuine willingness to learn. Softcat looks for attitude and potential as much as experience, especially for apprentices and early‑career roles.
