Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As a Public Sector Sales Apprentice at Softcat, my role focuses on supporting schools, colleges, and charities across the South Coast. I help customers understand their IT requirements and connect them with suitable technology solutions while developing my own sales, technical, and professional skills through on‑the‑job learning and structured training.
I work closely with my Account Manager and wider internal teams to manage customer relationships, progress opportunities through the sales cycle, and ensure a positive customer experience from initial contact through to delivery and ongoing support.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy my programme to a large extent. I find it engaging because it combines practical, hands‑on experience with structured learning that directly links to my day‑to‑day role as a Public Sector Sales Apprentice. Being able to apply what I learn through training sessions and coursework into real customer conversations and live opportunities makes the programme both rewarding and motivating.
I particularly enjoy the exposure to different areas of the business, such as working with internal specialists, attending vendor enablement sessions, and developing my confidence when speaking with customers. The programme has helped me build both my technical understanding and professional skills, while also giving me a clearer idea of how I can progress within Softcat. Overall, the balance between learning and real‑world experience makes the programme enjoyable and valuable to my development.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, I have learnt several new skills and also developed existing ones during my programme. In my role as a Public Sector Sales Apprentice, I have significantly improved my communication skills, particularly when speaking with customers such as IT managers and school business managers. I am now more confident when making outbound calls, asking relevant questions, and explaining solutions clearly and professionally.
I have also developed my sales and commercial awareness by gaining a better understanding of the sales process, including how opportunities are qualified, managed, and progressed through the pipeline. Supporting quotations, proposals, and renewals has helped me understand how pricing, value, and customer needs all link together in a real working environment.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
I would say my programme is well organised and structured overall. There is a clear balance between on‑the‑job learning and formal training, which helps me understand how my apprenticeship links directly to my role as a Public Sector Sales Apprentice. The structure of regular training sessions, reviews, and coursework provides guidance and clarity on what is expected at each stage.
The combination of day‑to‑day responsibilities, internal training, and vendor enablement sessions helps reinforce learning and keeps the programme relevant to my role. Having scheduled time for admin, calls, and development activities also helps me stay organised and manage my workload effectively.
While at times it can be challenging to balance work commitments alongside apprenticeship tasks, the overall structure of the programme supports my development and allows me to steadily build skills and confidence in a real working environment.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a high level of support from my employer throughout my programme. Within my role as a Public Sector Sales Apprentice at Softcat, I am well supported by my line manager and the wider sales team, who are always available to provide guidance, feedback, and support when needed. This has helped me build confidence and develop my skills in a supportive environment.
I am also supported through regular training sessions, internal enablement calls, and dedicated time for learning and development, which allows me to balance my day‑to‑day responsibilities with my apprenticeship requirements. Access to experienced colleagues and specialists means I can ask questions, learn from real scenarios, and continuously improve my understanding of both sales and technical topics.
Overall, the level of support from my employer has played a key role in my progress on the programme and has enabled me to develop both professionally and personally while managing my workload effectively.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive a good level of support from my training provider while working towards my qualifications. They provide clear guidance around coursework, deadlines, and assessment requirements, which helps me understand what is expected and how to structure my work alongside my job role.
Regular check‑ins and reviews give me the opportunity to discuss progress, ask questions, and raise any concerns. Feedback on submitted work is useful and helps me understand where I am doing well and where I can improve, which supports my ongoing development.
Overall, the support from my training provider helps me stay on track with my qualification and complements the on‑the‑job learning I receive from my employer, ensuring I am able to balance work responsibilities with my apprenticeship requirements effectively.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I feel that my qualification through my training provider supports my performance in my role to a good extent. The learning from the qualification helps reinforce key skills such as communication, organisation, and professionalism, which I apply daily in my role as a Public Sector Sales Apprentice. It gives useful context around workplace behaviours, expectations, and best practices, which helps me approach tasks more confidently and effectively.
The qualification also encourages me to reflect on my work and link theory to real‑world situations, such as customer interactions, managing workload, and working with colleagues. This has helped me better understand why certain processes are followed and how to improve the way I carry out my responsibilities.
While much of my learning also comes from hands‑on experience within the business, the qualification complements this by providing structure and helping me recognise and develop the skills needed to perform well and continue progressing in my role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes — there are extra‑curricular opportunities at Softcat, including social, charity, and professional networking activities. These include charity events such as Love2Give fundraisers, internal wellbeing and community networks, and regular vendor or customer networking events. These activities give employees the chance to socialise, build professional relationships, and get involved beyond their day‑to‑day role.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Softcat to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend Softcat to a friend because it’s a supportive and friendly place to work, with strong training and development opportunities. The culture encourages learning, teamwork, and progression, especially for apprentices. There are also lots of chances to get involved in social, charity, and networking activities, which helps make work enjoyable and builds confidence early in your career.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Softcat?
My main advice to anyone applying to Softcat would be to be yourself and show genuine enthusiasm for learning. Softcat places a lot of value on attitude, culture fit, and a willingness to develop, especially for apprentices, so it’s important to show curiosity, confidence, and a positive mindset rather than worrying about having lots of experience. Doing some research into the company and the role, giving clear real‑life examples of teamwork or communication skills, and asking thoughtful questions during the process can really help demonstrate that you are motivated and keen to grow within the business.
