Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am a NetSec Sales Apprentice within the Public Sector team at Softcat, specialising in networking, connectivity, and cyber security. On a day‑to‑day basis, I support Account Managers and customers by helping scope requirements, supporting renewals and quotes, liaising with vendor partners, and building strong product knowledge through training and self‑study. I regularly take part in customer discovery conversations to understand challenges and align solutions to business outcomes, while also being proactive in identifying opportunities and gaps during renewals. Alongside this, I work closely with my manager, mentors, and senior specialists to continuously develop my technical understanding, sales confidence, and value as a trusted NetSec resource for both internal teams and customers.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
The programme is great and has developed me so much in a short space of time, the support provided from everyone is great and even small things like having a mentor from your first day (previous year apprentice in the same role) has been invaluble.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Softcat to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend Softcat to a friend because it’s a genuinely people‑first organisation that invests heavily in its employees’ development. There is a strong culture of support, learning, and openness, where you’re encouraged to ask questions, take ownership of your growth, and step outside your comfort zone. From structured training and mentoring to the trust given early on to get involved in real customer work, Softcat creates an environment where you can build confidence, develop valuable skills, and enjoy coming to work while feeling supported by the people around you.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Softcat?
Show curiosity and willingness to learn, not just experience. Softcat values attitude and potential as much as technical knowledge, especially for early‑career roles. Be clear about how you learn and how you take ownership of your development.
Align yourself to the Softcat values. Whether it’s teamwork, responsibility, community, or passion for tech, use real examples that show how you work with others and how you contribute to a positive culture.
Be yourself and communicate naturally. Interviews aren’t about being overly formal or salesy – Softcat looks for people who are approachable, honest, and can hold a conversation.
Do your research on the role and the business. Understand what Softcat actually does, who its customers are, and how the role adds value. This really stands out compared to generic answers.
