Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I manage and lead a team of highly motivated and qualified electrical engineers to support BT and third‑party programmes for critical national infrastructure. My role focuses on producing and assuring safe, compliant and buildable designs, with particular emphasis on electrical safety, BS7671 compliance and risk management.
Day to day, I review designs, assess power and isolation arrangements, and resolve technical issues to prevent problems reaching site. I work closely with delivery teams, suppliers and stakeholders to unblock issues, challenge poor information and support right‑first‑time delivery, while also providing technical guidance and coaching to colleagues where needed, as well as managing my team.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I'm enjoying the programme. It’s challenging and time‑intensive at times, but I find it genuinely valuable. The learning is practical and relevant, and it has strengthened my confidence, self‑awareness and coaching capability. I particularly enjoy the opportunity to reflect on my practice, apply learning directly in the workplace, and engage with supervision and the wider coaching community, which has had a positive impact on both my leadership and personal development.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, I’ve both learnt new skills and strengthened existing ones. I’ve developed my coaching capability, particularly around non‑directive questioning, active listening, contracting and holding reflective space. I’ve also strengthened my self‑awareness, emotional intelligence and ability to challenge appropriately. These skills are now embedded in how I lead and support others day to day, not just in formal coaching conversations.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The Level 5 Coaching Professional apprenticeship is well structured and clearly organised, with a blended approach that works alongside a full-time operational role. The modular design, regular workshops, skills coach sessions and progress reviews provide clear milestones and expectations, while the emphasis on on‑the‑job learning means coaching activity, reflection and evidence gathering are embedded into my day‑to‑day work rather than treated as separate tasks. Managing the demand alongside work requires planning and flexibility, but by integrating coaching into existing responsibilities, using protected learning time effectively and spreading written work and reflection across quieter periods, the workload remains manageable. Overall, the structure supports sustained progress without feeling disconnected from, or overly burdensome on, my role.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive strong and ongoing support from my employer throughout the apprenticeship. My senior manager has been fully supportive from the outset, approving the programme, actively engaging in progress reviews and providing space to discuss workload, priorities and development needs. Regular tripartite progress reviews with my line manager and skills coach help ensure expectations are clear, progress is monitored and any pressures are addressed early. Protected learning time is supported in principle, and there is flexibility when operational demands change, with open conversations encouraged to balance business needs with apprenticeship requirements. Overall, the support is consistent, visible and focused on enabling successful completion of the programme alongside my role.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive a high level of structured and ongoing support from my training provider while working towards the qualification. This includes regular one‑to‑one sessions with my skills coach, clear guidance ahead of progress reviews, and timely feedback to support reflection, evidence building and readiness for End Point Assessment. The provider offers a range of learning touchpoints such as virtual classrooms, workshops, recorded sessions and additional opportunities like coach camps, which help deepen practical coaching capability and confidence. Support is accessible and responsive, with clear communication around expectations, resources and milestones, ensuring I feel well guided throughout the programme while still being accountable for my own development.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The qualification supports me strongly in performing better in my role by directly enhancing how I lead, support and develop people on a day‑to‑day basis. The training provider’s focus on practical coaching skills, reflective practice and real workplace application means I am able to use the learning immediately in live conversations with colleagues, rather than treating it as theoretical knowledge. Tools, models and supervision from workshops, skills coach sessions and coach camps have improved my listening, questioning, contracting and boundary‑setting, which in turn has strengthened engagement, accountability and confidence within my team. Overall, the qualification has increased both my effectiveness and credibility as a people leader, with clear benefits to individual performance and wider team outcomes.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are a range of extra‑curricular activities available at work that support both social connection and professional development. In particular, there is an active internal coaching community, which offers opportunities to take part in peer knowledge‑share sessions, coaching workshops and community‑led events such as the Internal Coach Community - Peer Knowledge Share on Psychometric / Psychological Insights in Coaching, bringing coaches together from across BT to learn, share practice and build networks beyond immediate teams. Alongside this, there are collaborative initiatives such as the Prototype coaching market, where colleagues contribute to shaping how coaching operates across the organisation, providing valuable exposure to cross‑business working and professional networking. Through the training provider, there are also voluntary Coach Camps, which create a safe, supportive space to practise coaching with peers, observe others and build confidence while strengthening professional relationships. Together, these activities offer meaningful opportunities to engage beyond core role requirements, combining learning, networking and community involvement.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I’d definitely recommend working at BT because there’s a genuine commitment to people development and long‑term careers. There are lots of opportunities to learn on the job, take part in formal training like apprenticeships, and get exposure to different roles and areas of the business. You’re encouraged to build new skills, stretch yourself and move sideways or upwards if you want to, rather than feeling stuck in one role. On top of that, there are strong professional networks and communities you can get involved in, which really help with visibility, confidence and career growth. It feels like a place where you can keep evolving, not just do the same job year after year.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
My advice would be to be yourself, show a genuine willingness to learn, and demonstrate a growth mindset. Take time to understand BT’s values and leadership standards, use real examples to show how you’ve made an impact, and be open about wanting to develop and progress. BT is a great place for people who are curious, collaborative and keen to build a career.
