Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I was working as a Java developer. The team uses Agile framework so every morning we had a stand up to talk about what we did and what we're working on. After the stand-up I usually continued my work or asked for help and set up meetings with other members to get help and insights from more experienced people
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
The first half of the month was more about pair programming, debugging little projects and really observation on how the rest the team's members work. The second half I was given ownership for one of the application currently in development and had to write good tests for it.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I developed my Java skills, learned about Apache Kafka a publish/subscribe messaging system that is quite tricky to grasp at first but by pair programming and reading documentation you get to understand how it works.
I also learned about Behaviour driven development tests using cucumber, learned about CI/CD with Jenkins
Also worked with rest API with Flask and dash with Python on a side project. Helped me improve my python skills and allowed me to learn about dash application and rest apis.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
The other intern working with me and I received a lot of guidance and support every day. At any point we were left on our own, there was always someone available if we got stuck on something or if we had questions. Mostly the analyst and associate of the teams, but even the AVP, VP's and director were still reachable if you planned a meeting. Even out of the team, the other teams member were keen to show their work or provide guidance.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Great culture, everyone's open to conversation. You can just come to their desk or set up meetings, they will generally happy to talk to you. I was quite surprised about the diversity of our intern cohort which is good. A lot of initiatives for inclusiveness. Weekly social events as well that allows everyone to know each other and good atmosphere in general. Good infrastructure as well, the building provides bike facilities for cyclists, safe park, showers, free towel...
The workload is also quite light and they let you go and expand your network as much as you would like.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I really enjoyed my time at Deutsche Bank. What I liked the most about it is the culture and the people I have interacted with on a daily basis, whether it is interns or other members of the company. The workload was lighter than expected and the work only became hands-on in the second half of the internship. However we also had an intern's project that was quite interesting to work on and occupied us for most of the internship.
I definitely had a great time here. I could probably come back for the people at Deutsche bank, but I'm not sure about working in London and in pure software engineering, I'd to work with stats as well in data science or financial engineering (quant).
Also, I'm afraid Deutsche Bank performs poorly regarding sustainable investments which is important to me and is a crucial point for me to come back.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Deutsche Bank to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Deutsche Bank
Like for any other banks, prepare in advance the interview process and the assessment centre. The questions are not too technical and accessible to a student who does not study computer science but they will value your leadership roles, your communication skills as well as your team work skills with a group interview. Be prepared for typical questions like why deutche bank, tell me a time when you were faced with this challenge and come up with this solution, etc.
