Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I am a fabricator/shipwright which involves the cutting of plate metal, welding, grinding and erection of plate steel to construct ships
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I really enjoy working here as it gives me a challenge everyday and each day is different. Also the staff are very friendly and supportive and pass on their experience and knowledge.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt a lot of new skills such as thermal cutting, welding, the use of plumb bobs and a variety of equipment and machines bespoke to ship building. I have developed some of my existing skills such as interpreting technical drawings and measuring techniques.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

It is very organised, I am always informed of any changes and provide structure to our programme by have set dates that I will spend with different departments to broaden my knowledge and skills within the industry.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a lot off support on the job from experienced colleagues as well as support from our training team for my college work
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I receive a lot of support from my training provider, they teach at a pace that each of us can understand and they ensure we understand before they move on. I also can get extra sessions of support from the college to help with our portfolio work.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I feel that my qualification helps me a lot to perform better in my role as they don’t just teach the syllabus, they also teach industry knowledge from there own experiences.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Because everyone helps each other out and supports one another as well as the banter makes it fun to work here.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Navantia UK?
I would suggest to apply anyway even if you think your experience isn’t enough as they have various apprenticeships and traineeships to support you as they don’t just look for qualifications and experience, they also look at the person that you are. Also don’t be shy everyone here is approachable and friendly.
