Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My role involves designing and developing machinery space systems and layouts onboard vessels. I produce system arrangements and schematics that ensure all equipment is efficiently integrated within the available space while remaining safe, practical, and compliant with industry standards. By interpreting classification society rules and statutory regulations, and by carrying out detailed engineering calculations, I determine appropriate sizes for pipework, pumps, valves, and associated equipment.
On a day to day basis, I work closely with other engineering disciplines to coordinate designs, resolve technical challenges, and refine layouts. This includes reviewing drawings, responding to technical queries, and adapting designs based on feedback from shipyards, suppliers, and regulatory bodies. The role requires a balance of technical accuracy, problem solving, and clear communication to ensure the final design is both compliant and buildable.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I greatly enjoy my programme as it gives me the opportunity to apply theoretical engineering knowledge to real world problems. The hands on design work, combined with learning industry rules and standards, has helped me develop both my technical skills and confidence. I find the work engaging and rewarding, particularly when seeing designs progress from concept to practical solutions

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have developed a range of new technical and professional skills like two dimensional and three dimensional drawing using different software's, and I have learned how to carry out engineering calculations to correctly size pipework, pumps, and other machinery.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
It was great. My Training Manager was really helpful.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
The whole apprenticeship was great. I had fantastic support from my colleagues.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
The whole apprenticeship was great. I had fantastic support from my Tutors.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I feel that my qualification through my training provider supports my role very well. The theoretical knowledge I gain helps me better understand the engineering principles behind the systems I design, which improves the quality and confidence of my day to day work. Subjects such as fluid mechanics, engineering calculations, and design principles directly relate to tasks like sizing pipework, selecting equipment, and interpreting system requirements.
The qualification also helps me understand why industry rules and standards are applied, rather than simply following them, which allows me to make more informed design decisions. By linking theory with practical workplace experience, the training has reinforced my technical understanding and improved my problem solving skills. Overall, the qualification complements my on the job learning and enables me to perform my role more effectively and efficiently.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
I enjoy the occasional curry night out or a day out down Exeter on the train with my colleagues.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Navantia UK to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend working at Navantia because it offers the opportunity to be involved in complex, engineering projects within a supportive and professional environment. The work is technically challenging and varied, allowing engineers to develop practical skills while applying engineering theory to designs.
Navantia places a strong emphasis on learning and development, particularly for those early in their careers. I have been given the opportunity to build my knowledge through hands on experience, training programmes, and guidance from experienced engineers. This has helped me grow in confidence and technical ability while gaining an understanding of how large scale marine engineering projects are delivered.
In addition, the collaborative working culture encourages teamwork across different disciplines, which helps develop communication skills and a broader understanding of the overall design process. The combination of interesting work, professional support, and long term career development makes Navantia a rewarding place to work.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Navantia UK?
If you don't get in on your first try, don't give up. Its worth it!
