Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I work in the IP Management Centre, where I monitor, diagnose, and remotely resolve network issues across the UK’s largest network. This includes everything from restoring local circuits that keep airports, banks, and hospitals online, to managing major peering backhauls used by tens of millions of customers. My role ensures critical national services remain stable, secure, and highly available.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I really enjoy my programme to a great extent, and am extremely proud of the work the I do. The work is varied, fast‑paced, and genuinely impactful, which keeps each day engaging. I’m constantly learning — whether it’s deepening my technical skills, understanding new network behaviours, or handling high‑priority incidents that support critical national services. I also appreciate the exposure to different parts of the business and the opportunity to grow both professionally and personally.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Developed strong diagnostic skills by identifying and resolving complex network faults across IP, routing, and connectivity platforms.
Network Monitoring & Analysis:
Gained experience using strategic monitoring tools to assess service health, analyse alarms, and spot early warning indicators before they impact customers.
Incident Management:
Built confidence handling live incidents, prioritising effectively, communicating clearly with stakeholders, and maintaining calm under pressure.
Understanding of Large‑Scale Networks:
Improved knowledge of how high‑capacity networks operate, including peering, backhauls, core routing, and customer access circuits.
Collaboration & Communication:
Strengthened teamwork by working closely with shift teams, field engineers, and other technical units to resolve issues efficiently.
Time Management & Prioritisation:
Learned how to manage fast‑paced workloads, juggle multiple fault queues, and maintain accuracy in a high‑demand environment.
Problem‑Solving & Analytical Thinking:
Developed the ability to break down complex issues, interpret network behaviours, and apply logical troubleshooting steps.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
While the company provides a strong structured programme with on‑the‑job learning, the structure provided by the learning provider was inconsistent. There have been occasions where communication, scheduling, and clarity around expectations could have been better. Although the programme has still allowed me to develop strong foundations, a lot of material was dated, leaving the employer to provide upto date information and training. Improvements from the provider would make the overall experience more streamlined and supportive.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
BT Group has a strong Apprenticeship background with my business units leadership being made up mostly of ex apprentices who understand and have experience the programme (So they get it!). My team, leadership, and wider organisation are always willing to help, provide guidance, and create opportunities for development. Whether it’s day‑to‑day support, learning on the job, or accessing resources to help me progress, I’ve consistently felt encouraged and well supported throughout the programme.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
While there have been moments of useful guidance, the overall support has been inconsistent. Communication, clarity around requirements, and timely feedback could be improved to help me stay on track with my qualification more effectively. Although I’ve managed to progress with my learning, stronger and more reliable support from the provider would make a noticeable difference to my overall experience.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The training has given me a strong foundational understanding of networking concepts, which directly supports the work I do day‑to‑day. It helps me approach incidents with better technical confidence and a clearer grasp of how different parts of the network operate. While the practical experience in my role is where most of my learning happens, the qualification definitely enhances my overall performance and understanding.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
e have several cultural networks that regularly host events, talks, and engagement sessions. These provide great opportunities to meet new people, learn from different perspectives, and get involved in the wider community beyond day‑to‑day work.
