Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Working on shift, the roles vary from doing some administration, attending breakdowns to performing changeovers on the machines. but there will also be a time where we will be servicing the machines during the shutdown period, as well as assisting when and where possible in the ever changing project work done to expand, improve and upgrade our factory. This can be from doing some basic electrical installation work, all the way to modifying, turning, fabricating and welding. Everyday is different and no task is usually the same!
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
Due to it being a multiskilled role, it is great that we get to experience different jobs and learn different skills. But, with the benefits of the role it is also hard to become skilled in a specific role due to being the Jack of all trades, but the master of none.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
With it being a multiskilled role, I am able to dip many fingers in many pies but that does not mean I am a professional at the skill. This role slowly drip feeds and helps me in discovering a new skill as well as slowly improve on my ever expanding skills. Though, there will be a drought at times and sometimes the skill will be lost with new skills coming in, but it will slowly get picked up again when and where possible.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
When i started the apprenticeship our workplace and college had a miscommunication whereby myself and another apprentice will receive a completely different qualification to the rest of the class due to not attending one of the days in college as an agreement to spend 2 days in the workplace for our 1st year.
Unfortunately due to events outside of my employers reach, we had to leave the original college that I started my apprenticeship with due to changes within the teaching department and meant that myself and another apprentice had to move colleges near the end of our apprenticeship.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
They have been fantastic with assisting in explaining the processes of how something works. Whether that be from the engineering department, the production managers, to the operators working on the machines. We also receive training opportunities when possible as well as annual/refresher courses as and when needed which enhances our roles.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
When i started my apprenticeship, the support was great, but as time went on, the first college had lost all their original tutors who were meant to run the course until the end of my apprenticeship, which meant that the course and specification were not of expectations, leading to me and another lad leaving to join a new college. They have been great at integrating us and are helping us get us to our End Point Assessment.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
When starting, yes. The syllabus was broad but it gave me a better grasp and introduces us to the role and what is expected as an engineer. Basically brings us to grasp it at a basic level before we learn more about the role on the trade.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
We sponsor a lot of companies which enables us to have free or discounted entry to certain events and venues.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Roxane UK to a friend?
No
Why?
As much as I like the crew here, it is both mentally and physically demanding with it being a shift pattern and the working environment is very hot, especially during the Summer period. Full break coverage are not guaranteed depending on the breakdown, crew availability, and the demand needed for the day. Days and nights feel long, especially if you have a busy life outside of work, so be prepared to make the sacrifice.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Roxane UK?
Be prepared for 12 hour shifts with early and late starts. There will be a month of working weekends and vice versa, so be prepared to change your routines and schedules to accommodate for these changes.
Attend every breakdown (in the factory - but if you're qualified - then see to the person aswell), arrive early for handover and just get stuck in. Ask questions, no matter how silly and be attentive to whoever you are with when learning a skill, as everyone has different methods and ways of solving things.
