Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
As a Project Manager, i am responsible for the day‑to‑day leadership and coordination of a project, ensuring delivery of agreed outcomes within time, cost, quality, and scope constraints. I plan and prioritise work, lead and support the project team, manage risks, issues, and change, and communicate regularly with stakeholders. I monitor progress against the delivery plan, maintain governance and controls, manage resources and budgets, and keep a clear focus on benefits realisation and continuous improvement throughout the project lifecycle.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I enjoy certain aspects of my project management degree, particularly applying theory to real‑world projects and developing practical skills. However, studying online can be challenging, and the course is quite time‑consuming, requiring a high level of self‑discipline alongside work and other commitments.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
Yes, I have learned new skills and further developed existing ones. The course has strengthened my understanding of project management theory and improved my practical skills, including planning, risk management, stakeholder engagement, and critical thinking. It has also helped me become more reflective and structured in how I approach projects in my day‑to‑day role.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The programme is mainly well organised and structured, with clear modules and expectations. However, studying online can sometimes make it harder to stay fully engaged, and the workload requires strong time management to keep on track.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a lot of support from my employer. They are very supportive of my studies, give me flexibility where possible, and actively encourage my professional development alongside my role.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
The level of support varies between skills coaches. Some provide very strong guidance and regular contact, the skills coaches change frequently, so the overall experience can depend on who you are working with at the time.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
My qualification supports me well in performing my role. It helps me apply structured project management theory to real‑world situations, strengthens my decision‑making and problem‑solving skills, and reinforces best practice in areas such as planning, risk management, and stakeholder engagement. While balancing study alongside work can be challenging, the learning directly enhances how I approach and deliver my day‑to‑day responsibilities.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
In HMRC, colleagues can get involved in a range of extra‑curricular activities. These include staff networks (such as Social Mobility and other inclusion networks), regional and national sports and social clubs, volunteering and community initiatives, and professional networking and development events. There are also opportunities to participate in cross‑departmental groups, learning communities, and employee‑led events, allowing people to connect, share experiences, and build skills beyond their core role.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend HMRC to a friend?
Yes
Why?
es, I would recommend HMRC to a friend because it offers strong job security, good opportunities for learning and career development, and a supportive working environment. HMRC also provides flexibility, encourages professional growth, and gives staff the chance to work on meaningful projects that have a real public impact.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to HMRC?
My advice to anyone applying to HMRC is to read the job advert carefully and tailor your application to the Success Profiles framework. Use clear, structured examples that show how you meet the required behaviours, strengths, and experience, and focus on real evidence rather than generic statements. Take advantage of the guidance and support available, such as application resources, mock interviews, and peer feedback, and don’t be discouraged if you’re not successful the first time — learning from feedback and persisting really helps.
