Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Subcontract Management, from procurement, to managing payments and variations. Involved in tracking cost vs budget, change and contribute towards building up the application for payment to the client. Managing and updating forecasts.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I think its good experience and the college blocks are enjoyable. There are a lot of good people in the business, including the apprentices you meet during study blocks. I've been on the same project since the start of my apprenticeship, so I feel as though there has been a lack of variation and experience which is why I've not scored it 5.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Developed numerous skills involved in the commercial side of construction, however as mentioned previously, I feel my learning curve has stalled in recent years as I have been on the same on the same project, undertaking the same tasks. Being on various projects would probably have increased my experience and improved my skillset.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The first 2 years with 9 week blocks work well, as you can focus on your college work and site work separately. With block release, it is good, but you more or less have to condense your workload into 3 weeks, as it doesn't get picked up if you're away for just a week. This gets difficult, especially as QS's tend to work in a 4 week cycle.
Communication has improved and hotels for college are always booked. Could be structured better if it was mandated that apprentices had to move between sites to gain further experience, which would be beneficial. It would stop being kept in a corner undertaking the same tasks because you're good at them, as its what the project needs.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
Support is there for you if you need it.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Support is good from the training provider. Frequent meetings with a designated assessor to help you sign off all your experience required to complete the apprenticeship.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I think it is good to get a general idea of the construction industry, but as a Civil Engineering contractor, the course is more tailored to housing construction. It is good to get an understanding of contracts however.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
The number of activities available depends on your site. Events often get arranged. When at college/university, there is plenty of opportunity to organise social activities with the other apprentices.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAM to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Good company that look out for you. They have some of the biggest Civil Engineering Projects in the UK, which are good for experience.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?
At some point during the apprenticeship, it is likely that you'll have to live away from home so make sure you're comfortable with doing that. Research the company beforehand to show interest.
