Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I am currently with the survey team on the TransPennine Route Upgrade and we maintain the control network for the project. I am often in nights where we use a total station to travers control. We also use a digital level and staffs to level control. We also use the total station to monitor movements of assets like the track to ensure the safe passage of trains.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I have thoroughly enjoyed it and genuinely could not recommend it enough. The team I am working with are all lovely and want to see my develop my career. I have a passion for the industry and I still cant believe that I get to be involved in a project as rewarding as this.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Defiantly, I have learned how to set up over a PGM and how to do monitoring on my own. I have also learned how to do traversing and levelling. More than this I have learned the theory behind it, our role in the project and about the wider industry.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
It is very well organised with there being a 9 week block in uni where BAM very much encourage networking among your peers and then monthly teams meetings with someone from uni giving you feedback and guidance on you Knowledge Skills and Behaviour (KSBs) logging.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive ample support as I have PDR meetings with my line manager once a month to help me with my career ambitions and I have support from people around me at work as well as from the university.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
We receive a lot of support from them with us having the time to fully dedicate ourselves to it when were there.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
I don't think that it would make a huge difference in all honesty. A lot of what you learn in collage isn't used on site.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yes, there are ICE (Institute of Civil Engineers) social events that I attend as well as other BAM social events. Work also host a Christmas party as well as leaving party's.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAM to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I have recommended BAM to friends before because they are genuinely a good company to work for with the people really making it. I have worked in both the infrastructure side of BAM as well as the construct and all the people who I met doing that were all welcoming and great.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?
1. Get work experience before hand ideally with BAM (that's what I did in the construct side)
2. Be passivate about the industry and be curious
3. Learn BAMs values and believe in BAMs wider goals and what you will be doing as it will have a genuinely positive impact on many people.
