Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I am an Advanced Technical Apprentice within DBU International Technical Support Europe, based in Darlington. On a day‑to‑day basis, my role involves supporting field service engineers and distributors across Europe by assisting with technical diagnostics, fault investigations, and root cause analysis on Cummins engines and power generation systems.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy the program to a high extent. It provides a strong balance between hands‑on technical work, real business impact, and structured learning. I value the exposure to real customer issues, the opportunity to work with experienced engineers, and the responsibility I am given to contribute meaningfully to investigations and technical support activities.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have developed a range of new technical and professional skills during my time on the program, while also strengthening existing ones. My technical capability has improved significantly through hands‑on use of Cummins diagnostic and engineering tools, data analysis, and structured fault investigations, allowing me to better understand engine systems, controls, and real‑world failure modes. Alongside technical skills, I have enhanced my problem‑solving, analytical thinking, and technical communication abilities by supporting live cases, producing clear documentation, and communicating findings to engineers and technical stakeholders across Europe. I have also developed stronger time management and prioritization skills by balancing operational support, training activities, and academic commitments as part of the apprenticeship program.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The program is generally well organized and structured, with a clear apprenticeship framework that combines workplace learning, technical rotations, and university study. Expectations and objectives are set out clearly, and the structure allows for gradual progression in responsibility and technical complexity. While some elements naturally vary depending on business priorities, overall the program provides a strong and consistent learning pathway.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a high level of support from Cummins. My manager, team, and wider technical network are approachable and supportive, providing guidance, feedback, and opportunities to develop. There is strong encouragement to ask questions, learn from experienced engineers, and take ownership of work, alongside flexibility and understanding when balancing operational tasks with academic commitments.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I receive a good level of support from my training provider while working towards my qualifications. Guidance is available when required, with clear expectations around coursework, assessments, and progress reviews. Feedback is provided at appropriate points, and the overall approach supports balancing academic requirements alongside full‑time work.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The qualification supports my performance in my role by strengthening my understanding of engineering principles, analytical thinking, and structured problem‑solving. This academic learning complements my practical experience at work and helps me approach technical tasks with greater confidence and understanding.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Through EEEC, there are opportunities to engage in extra‑curricular and wider development activities, including networking events, workshops, and opportunities to interact with other apprentices across different employers and disciplines. These activities help build professional connections, share experiences, and support personal development beyond the core academic and workplace requirements.
