During my apprenticeship, I have developed a strong understanding of the role of an Engineering Technician within a modern manufacturing environment. The apprenticeship began with an intensive four-week block release at college, where I worked towards achieving my Level 2 qualification within both a classroom and workshop setting. This initial period provided me with a solid foundation in core engineering principles, including health and safety, basic machining theory, engineering mathematics, technical drawing interpretation and workshop practices. It also helped me to build confidence in working with engineering documentation and understanding how manufacturing processes operate in a structured industrial setting.
Following completion of the initial block release, the apprenticeship progressed into a day-release format, where I attended college for one to two days per week while continuing to work full time within the business. During this stage, I worked towards my Level 3 qualification and NVQ, which allowed me to further develop both my theoretical knowledge and practical skills. This balance of classroom learning and workplace experience enabled me to apply engineering concepts directly to real manufacturing challenges, reinforcing my understanding of production processes, quality requirements and continuous improvement methodologies.
On a day-to-day basis, my role involves supporting manufacturing and project engineering activities across production areas. This includes assisting with the implementation of new equipment and automation, supporting production readiness activities, updating and creating technical documentation such as standard operating procedures and maintenance instructions, and collaborating with cross-functional teams including operations, quality and health and safety. I am also involved in problem-solving activities on the production line, data collection and analysis, and contributing to improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing efficiency, safety and product quality. Through these responsibilities, I have developed key professional skills such as communication, organisation, attention to detail and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I have thoroughly enjoyed my apprenticeship programme as it has provided me with the opportunity to develop both my technical knowledge and practical skills within a real manufacturing environment. The programme has allowed me to gain hands-on experience while also continuing my academic studies, which has helped me to better understand how engineering theory is applied in industry. I particularly enjoy being involved in projects that contribute to improving production processes, implementing new equipment and supporting continuous improvement initiatives, as this gives me a strong sense of responsibility and achievement.
The structure of the programme, combining workplace learning with college-based study, has been beneficial in helping me build confidence and independence in my role. It has also enabled me to develop important professional skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, communication and time management. While there have been challenges, such as balancing work commitments with coursework and adapting to new technical tasks, these experiences have helped me grow both personally and professionally.
Overall, I feel the apprenticeship has been a very positive and rewarding experience. It has strengthened my interest in engineering and has provided a clear pathway for future career progression within the manufacturing industry. The programme has also helped me to understand the importance of continuous learning and development in order to succeed in a fast-paced and evolving engineering environment.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Throughout my apprenticeship, I have developed a wide range of new skills while also strengthening many of the existing skills I had prior to starting the programme. One of the key areas of development has been my technical understanding of manufacturing processes, engineering documentation and production systems. I have gained experience in interpreting technical drawings, understanding tolerances and specifications, and supporting the implementation of new equipment and automation within a production environment.
In addition to technical skills, I have significantly improved my problem-solving abilities by being involved in real workplace challenges, such as identifying process issues, supporting continuous improvement activities and contributing to production readiness tasks. I have also developed stronger organisational and time management skills through balancing college coursework, on-the-job responsibilities and project deadlines.
My communication and teamwork skills have also progressed, as my role requires regular collaboration with cross-functional teams including operations, quality, health and safety and other engineering functions. This has helped me build confidence in presenting ideas, asking questions and contributing to technical discussions. Overall, the apprenticeship has enabled me to grow both professionally and personally, providing me with the practical experience and knowledge required to progress within an engineering career.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

Overall, my apprenticeship programme has been well organised and structured, providing a clear balance between academic learning and practical workplace experience. The programme began with an initial block release at college, which helped to build a strong foundation in key engineering principles before progressing into a day-release format. This structure has allowed me to gradually develop my knowledge and skills while applying what I learn directly within a real manufacturing environment.
In the workplace, I have been given opportunities to work on a variety of tasks and projects, which has helped me gain a broader understanding of engineering operations and production processes. The programme has provided a clear pathway for progression, with defined qualifications and milestones such as completing Level 2, progressing to Level 3, and working towards my NVQ. This has helped me stay focused on my development and understand what is expected at each stage of the apprenticeship.
There have been occasions where balancing workload between college assignments and workplace responsibilities has been challenging. However, overall the structure of the programme has supported my development by encouraging independence, time management and professional growth. The combination of structured learning, practical experience and ongoing support has helped create a positive and effective learning environment.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a good level of support from my employer throughout my apprenticeship, which has played an important role in my development both academically and professionally. I am given the opportunity to work alongside experienced engineers and production staff who are willing to share their knowledge and provide guidance when required. This has helped me to build confidence in my role and gain a better understanding of real manufacturing processes and workplace expectations.
My employer also supports my attendance at college by allowing time for day-release study and recognising the importance of completing coursework and assignments. In addition, I am encouraged to take part in a range of workplace activities and projects that contribute to my learning and skills development. This hands-on experience has been valuable in helping me apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations.
There are times when workload pressures can make it more challenging to balance work responsibilities with study commitments; however, overall I feel that the support provided has been positive. The combination of on-the-job learning, access to knowledgeable colleagues and opportunities to develop new skills has enabled me to make good progress within my apprenticeship programme.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I receive a good level of support from my training provider while working towards my qualifications. Tutors are generally approachable and willing to provide guidance when needed, whether this is during lessons, through email or by offering additional help with coursework and assignment requirements. This support has been important in helping me understand more complex engineering topics and ensuring that I am able to progress confidently through the programme.
The structured delivery of lessons and clear explanation of assessment criteria have helped me stay focused on what is required to successfully complete each unit. I have also found the feedback provided on assignments useful, as it highlights areas for improvement and helps me to further develop my technical knowledge and report-writing skills. In addition, access to learning resources such as workshop facilities, online materials and revision support has supported my overall learning experience.
At times, balancing college work with full-time employment can be challenging; however, the support and communication from tutors has helped make the workload more manageable. Overall, I feel that the training provider has played a key role in my development by creating a supportive learning environment and providing the guidance needed to work towards achieving my qualifications.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I feel that the qualification I am working towards through my training provider has had a positive impact on my ability to perform more effectively in my role. The course has helped me develop a stronger understanding of key engineering principles such as manufacturing processes, engineering mathematics, technical drawing interpretation and health and safety requirements. This theoretical knowledge has enabled me to approach workplace tasks with greater confidence and a clearer understanding of why certain procedures and standards are followed.
The qualification has also supported the development of important practical and professional skills, including problem-solving, analytical thinking, time management and technical communication. Being able to apply what I learn at college directly within a real manufacturing environment has reinforced my understanding and allowed me to contribute more meaningfully to engineering activities and improvement initiatives. For example, knowledge gained through my studies has helped me better understand tolerances, process requirements and the importance of quality standards when supporting production or working with technical documentation.
Overall, I believe that the qualification plays an important role in supporting my development and improving my performance in the workplace. It provides a structured pathway for learning, helps build competence and confidence in engineering tasks, and prepares me for increased responsibility and future career progression within the industry.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are a range of extra-curricular activities that you can get involved in at work such as football, running etc whilst also having the opportunity to connect with new people in networking events that are commonly held at the site throughout the year. We also get the chance to lead and show young people from secondary schools around the site to provide them with insight into the world of engineering and manufacturing to help them open up to he opportunities that are available whilst also developing their understanding.
EEEC is another function that every employee within Cummins must participate in. EEEC is about giving back and supporting the community. Things such as, litter picking, helping out in charity shops to running and organising sporting events are included within EEEC. I think Cummins makes a huge difference to the local community by supporting schools, those less fortunate etc. which is something alot of other companies don't do.
