Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Work in the Product Security Engineering Team, ensuring complex systems are 'secure-by-design'. This includes deriving security requirements, conducting threat modelling and vulnerability assessment activities on architectural designs and designing security controls mapped to risk management frameworks like ISO and NIST
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
Very enjoyable and educational so far. Lots of opportunities both at work and in college.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Everything from Operating Systems (Windows and Linux) and Programming (high- and low-level languages) to Networking and Cyber Threats
Skills relevant to security architecture, systems engineering and information assurance including mapping controls and threat modelling
Soft skills such as team working in tabletop exercises and delivering presentations to various stakeholders

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
Fairly well structured. Placements are designed to align with content delivered in degree. However, you a lot of additional learning is required to be truly effective in the workplace. Degree is well run with highly relevant content.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Support is available throughout the business, however you have to actively seek it as it is not always obvious who to ask depending on the need. A lot of bureaucracy
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Similarly a lot of support is available, however it is not always obvious who to ask
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
Pretty much necessary for this role unless you are already coming in with strong IT knowledge. Understanding of networking concepts and cyber threats in particular is crucial
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Plenty of work socials hosted for apprentices and graduates, providing opportunities to network within the business. Participation in local STEM volunteering events is expected and depending on where you are based, there may be professional events relevant to cyber security.
College has a large cohort with a wide range of company backgrounds and roles, including tech companies, MSPs and consultancies.
