Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
My role as a solicitor apprentice involves supporting the legal team on a range of corporate and transactional matters while studying alongside work.
On a day‑to‑day basis, I assist with tasks such as legal research, drafting and reviewing documents, preparing verification notes, organising transaction documents, and liaising with colleagues across different teams. I regularly work with trainees, associates and partners, and I’m encouraged to ask questions and take ownership of tasks appropriate to my level.
My days are varied - some are more research‑focused, while others involve coordinating with clients, finance teams or corporate secretaries, or helping to progress live matters.
Alongside my work, I balance study time for my apprenticeship qualification, which helps me apply what I’m learning academically to real client work.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I enjoy the programme overall and find the work interesting and rewarding when I’m busy, particularly because I’m involved in real matters and given responsibility appropriate to my level. One of the challenges is that the workload can be inconsistent at times - some periods are very busy, while others are quieter - which can be a bit frustrating. That said, when work is available, it’s meaningful and helps me develop practical legal skills, and the overall experience has been positive and worthwhile.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, I’ve developed a wide range of new skills and strengthened existing ones throughout the programme. I’ve built strong legal research and drafting skills, as well as attention to detail through reviewing documents and preparing verification notes. I’ve also significantly improved my communication skills by working with trainees, associates, partners and support teams, and by confidently asking questions and taking on feedback. Being involved in live matters has helped me develop time‑management skills, professionalism and a better understanding of how legal work operates in practice. Overall, the programme has been very effective in helping me grow both technically and personally.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The programme is reasonably well organised overall, with a clear framework in place and good support when needed. However, the structure can feel inconsistent at times, particularly in terms of workload - some periods are very busy, while others are quieter, which can make the experience feel less structured day to day. That said, there is flexibility to learn and ask for work, and when matters are active, the organisation and support are much clearer. Overall, the programme is solid but could benefit from more consistency.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I receive good support from my employer when I need it, and I feel comfortable reaching out to ask questions or for guidance. Colleagues are approachable and responsive, which makes it easy to get help when required. However, there isn’t a very structured or regular support system in place unless you actively seek it out yourself. Overall, the support is strong when accessed, but it relies on you being proactive.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I receive good support from my training provider when working towards my qualifications, and support can be arranged whenever I need it. Tutors and contacts are helpful and responsive once you reach out. However, the support is not very proactive, and there isn’t much regular check‑in unless you actively seek it. Overall, the support is strong when accessed, but it relies on you being self‑directed.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
My qualification is helpful in building a strong theoretical foundation and understanding key legal principles, which is important for long‑term development. However, much of the content is quite academic, and there is a noticeable gap between the theory covered by the training provider and the practical realities of working in a legal role. That said, this is largely reflective of how law works in practice, and the qualification still provides useful context that supports my day‑to‑day work overall.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are plenty of extra‑curricular activities to get involved in at work. There is a strong social and professional culture, with opportunities to take part in social events, networking sessions, firm‑wide initiatives and interest groups. These activities make it easy to meet people across different teams and build relationships outside of day‑to‑day work. There are also opportunities to get involved in wider firm initiatives, which helps you feel engaged and part of the firm beyond your role.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend CMS to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would 100% recommend CMS to a friend. The firm has a very friendly and relaxed culture while still taking progression and personal development seriously. People are approachable, supportive, and genuinely invested in helping you grow, which makes it a great environment to learn and develop alongside high‑quality work.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to CMS?
My main advice would be to be authentic and make the most of your own experiences - every experience you’ve had contributes to your development in some way, even if it doesn’t seem directly relevant at first. It’s also important to understand what CMS stands for as a firm and to appreciate that innovation is a key part of its culture and approach to legal work.
