Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Learning new technologies and systems, university sessions, EPA work, KSB analysis, completing tickets, project management, Git management, general software development, debugging.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
For the most part I enjoy it. I find the slow progress frustrating at times.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learned many new skills in software and DTS development. I am always learning new things daily. This is both self-driven and with support from placement manager, professionals and other apprentices. Skills: Programming languages, programming, application design, project management, product safety, documentation, presentations, English, Maths etc.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
For the most part it is well structured. I have guidance and reviews frequently by skills coach and placement manager. Sometimes placement rotation and information on the endpoint of the apprenticeship can be unclear or vague.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive plenty of time to complete learning assignments and support. Off-the-job work is given to me and monitored and I can request more with lots of latitude. Occasionally it can be hard to get help from professionals who have their own things to deal with.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I have frequent progress reviews and I feel supported. I have a lot of leeway to approach achieving my targets.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
It's mostly relevant but there are some places where there isn't much overlap with the real work we do on the job. For example, I learn a lot of Python on my course but don't use it at all in the workplace.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are stretch activities and a few extra-curricular activities available. It can be hard to find them at times however.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Great company, culture and benefits. People are mostly very helpful and there's lots of room to grow.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
If you're an older apprentice like me, don't feel bad about the low expectations and feeling like your career has stalled. There are opportunities to succeed if you can find them. Keep on track with your metrics and don't let occasional opaqueness and lack of clarity on the future get you down.
