In my role as an Apprentice Financial Planning Assistant, I provide essential support to the firm’s financial advisers, ensuring they are fully prepared for client interactions and that all post‑meeting administration is completed accurately and efficiently. My position combines day‑to‑day operational responsibilities with structured professional development as part of my apprenticeship, allowing me to build strong technical foundations while contributing meaningfully to the team. My role supports the advisers, the wider team, and the firm’s clients by ensuring that preparation, administration, and documentation are completed to a high standard. I contribute to the smooth running of the advice process while steadily developing the technical knowledge and practical experience required for a long‑term career in financial planning.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of the apprenticeship programme. The structure of the programme allows me to learn quickly and apply new knowledge directly to real client work, which has accelerated my development. I really value the opportunities I’m given to take on new tasks, expand my responsibilities, and build my technical skills in a supportive environment. Being able to grow while contributing meaningfully to the team is something I genuinely appreciate, and it motivates me to keep progressing.

Despite joining the firm straight from school with no prior experience in financial services, I have developed a wide range of professional and technical skills that now allow me to confidently carry out all aspects of my role. Through hands‑on learning, structured apprenticeship training, and day‑to‑day exposure to real client work, I have built strong capabilities in adviser meeting preparation, post‑meeting administration, provider liaison, and suitability report writing. I have learned how to navigate financial products, interpret policy information, maintain accurate records, and work to regulatory and compliance standards. I have also strengthened key professional skills such as communication, organisation, prioritisation, and attention to detail. Looking back at where I started—with only my A‑levels in Business, Sociology and PE—I am proud of how quickly I have progressed and how much responsibility I am now able to take on within the team.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The apprenticeship programme is extremely well‑organised and structured, which has made a huge difference to my development. The balance between on‑the‑job learning, formal study and regular check‑ins creates a clear pathway for progression and ensures I always know what I’m working towards. Each stage of the programme builds naturally on the last, giving me the right level of challenge at the right time. I’ve found the structure really motivating, as it allows me to learn quickly, take on new responsibilities with confidence and make steady, measurable progress. The clarity and support built into the programme have played a big part in how much I’ve been able to achieve so far.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I have received consistently strong support from my employer throughout my apprenticeship and this has played a major role in the progress I’ve made so far. From day one, I’ve been given clear guidance, patient training and the confidence to take on new responsibilities at a pace that stretches me without overwhelming me. The advisers and wider team are always willing to answer questions, explain processes and provide feedback, which has helped me develop quickly despite starting with no prior experience in financial services. The trust and encouragement I’ve been given have allowed me to grow from a complete beginner into someone who can independently prepare meeting packs, complete post‑meeting administration and draft suitability reports. The progress I’ve made is a direct reflection of the supportive environment the firm has created and I genuinely appreciate how invested they are in my development.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I also receive excellent support from my training provider, which has been invaluable while working towards my R01 qualification. The structured learning resources, regular check‑ins and clear guidance have helped me build confidence in a subject I had no prior experience in. Whenever I need clarification or extra help, my coach is always approachable and willing to explain things in a way that makes sense, which has made a real difference to how quickly I’ve been able to progress. Their support has strengthened my understanding of the regulatory framework and financial planning principles and it has directly contributed to the improvements I’ve made in my day‑to‑day role.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

Working towards my R01 qualification has had a direct and positive impact on how effectively I perform in my role. The knowledge I gain through my training provider, particularly around regulation, financial products and the wider advice framework, helps me understand the reasoning behind the tasks I complete each day. This deeper understanding allows me to approach meeting preparation, administration and suitability report writing with far more confidence and accuracy. It also means I can interpret information more quickly, spot what is relevant and work more independently. The qualification gives me the technical foundation I need to support advisers to a high standard and it strengthens the quality of the work I produce for clients.
