Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor at BAM Nuttall, my role is to support the commercial team with managing the financial side of construction projects. The aim is to help ensure work is delivered within budget while maintaining quality and safety.
On a day-to-day basis, I assist with order increases, which involves updating costs when project changes occur, such as additional work or materials. This helps keep financial records accurate. I also carry out staff reconciliation, where I check labour hours and records to ensure they match the information recorded in the system and that costs are correct.
I take part in weekly site visits to see project progress and understand how the work being carried out relates to the project costs. In addition, I manage some independent tasks, such as updating spreadsheets and preparing information for senior surveyors.
Overall, the role helps me develop skills in cost management, communication, and understanding construction processes.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I enjoy my apprenticeship programme because it allows me to learn while gaining real work experience. Working as an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor at BAM Nuttall means I can apply what I learn in my studies directly to real construction projects, which helps me understand the role much better.
One part I enjoy is the variation of working day. Some days I am working in the office on things like payments and Compensation Events, and other days I am visiting the site to see the progress of the project or partaking in training and workshops to increase my knowledge and understanding of business value. This balance helps keep the role interesting and gives me a better understanding of how construction projects work from both a financial and practical perspective.
I also enjoy developing new skills and knowledge. Being able to take on my own responsibilities and support experienced quantity surveyors helps me build confidence and learn more about the industry. Overall, the programme is a great opportunity to grow professionally while working towards becoming a qualified quantity surveyor.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, during my apprenticeship with BAM Nuttall I have learnt several new skills and developed existing ones through my daily tasks and responsibilities.
One key skill I have developed is attention to detail, especially when completing tasks such as Order Increases and looking after sub-contractors. These tasks require checking information carefully to ensure that labour hours, costs, and records are accurate.
I have also improved my communication skills by working with different members of the project team, including quantity surveyors, engineers, planners and site operatives. This helps ensure that information about work completed, costs, and project changes is clear and correct.
In addition, I have gained a better understanding of construction processes through weekly site visits. Seeing the work on site helps me understand how the financial side of a project links to the physical progress.
Overall, the apprenticeship has helped me build practical skills, increase my confidence, and develop a stronger understanding of my role within the team.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
My programme is extremely well organised, as I am on block release at college I gained a key understanding of the Industry early on that could be carried through onto site.
There is also support from both my workplace managers and my training provider (through a KSB Assessor), which helps me stay on track with my learning and development. Regular reviews and feedback allow me to understand what I am doing well and where I can improve.
Overall, the programme is structured in a way that supports learning, practical experience, and professional development throughout the apprenticeship.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Plenty! We attend many workshops and forums as well as training days to continuously improve employees skills. We have a range of benefits provided that are easy accessible and can be used by all.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
Throughout my college block I received high levels of support, they offered one on one teaching for pupils struggling and often looked through work to provide us with feedback. Outside of college, each student is assigned a KSB assessor that goes through students Portfolio of KSB's and asks about the work they are completing on site. Furthermore, roughly a month in the KSB assessor has a meeting with you and your line manager to speak about how well you have settled in.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I feel that the qualification I am completing through my training provider helps me perform better in my role as an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor at BAM Nuttall. The learning I complete as part of the qualification gives me a better understanding of the theory behind the work I do on site and in the office.
The qualification also helps me develop important professional skills such as organisation, communication, and problem-solving. Being able to apply what I learn in my studies to real tasks at work helps reinforce my understanding.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there is an abundance. We have many social activities that range from sports and social activities to neurodiverse groups that come together within the work place. Also, each employee has a volunteering day a year or multiple if they are very keen. This allows employees to partake in activities that give back to the community

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAM to a friend?
Yes
Why?
BAM has been nothing but welcoming, I have been given an enormous amount of opportunities to meet people within the business from fellow apprentices all the way through to Directors of Sectors. Although, I have only been with BAM for a short period of time but the knowledge and experience I have gained is extremely valuable and will last a lifetime.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?
I think the most important thing is to be your genuine self and believe in yourself and capabilities. Understanding of BAM Values and background information is also essential.
