Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
On a day-to-day basis, I assist with order increases, which involves updating costs when project changes occur, such as additional work or materials. This helps keep financial records accurate. I also carry out staff reconciliation, where I check labour hours and records to ensure they match the information recorded in the system and that costs are correct.
I take part in weekly site visits to see project progress and understand how the work being carried out relates to the project costs. In addition, I manage some independent tasks, such as updating spreadsheets and preparing information for senior surveyors.
Overall, the role helps me develop skills in cost management, communication, and understanding construction processes.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
One part I enjoy is the variation of working day. Some days I am working in the office on things like payments and Compensation Events, and other days I am visiting the site to see the progress of the project or partaking in training and workshops to increase my knowledge and understanding of business value. This balance helps keep the role interesting and gives me a better understanding of how construction projects work from both a financial and practical perspective.
I also enjoy developing new skills and knowledge. Being able to take on my own responsibilities and support experienced quantity surveyors helps me build confidence and learn more about the industry. Overall, the programme is a great opportunity to grow professionally while working towards becoming a qualified quantity surveyor.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
One key skill I have developed is attention to detail, especially when completing tasks such as Order Increases and looking after sub-contractors. These tasks require checking information carefully to ensure that labour hours, costs, and records are accurate.
I have also improved my communication skills by working with different members of the project team, including quantity surveyors, engineers, planners and site operatives. This helps ensure that information about work completed, costs, and project changes is clear and correct.
In addition, I have gained a better understanding of construction processes through weekly site visits. Seeing the work on site helps me understand how the financial side of a project links to the physical progress.
Overall, the apprenticeship has helped me build practical skills, increase my confidence, and develop a stronger understanding of my role within the team.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?
There is also support from both my workplace managers and my training provider (through a KSB Assessor), which helps me stay on track with my learning and development. Regular reviews and feedback allow me to understand what I am doing well and where I can improve.
Overall, the programme is structured in a way that supports learning, practical experience, and professional development throughout the apprenticeship.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
The qualification also helps me develop important professional skills such as organisation, communication, and problem-solving. Being able to apply what I learn in my studies to real tasks at work helps reinforce my understanding.
